INTRODUCING STEEMIANS TO THE WORLD OF FOOD
Hello, welcome to my blog. I believe you are good and in a nice shape. Today we are going back to the preambles of food. In today's blog we will be looking at the different classes of food and their functions. I want my readers to know what each classes of food are and their function to the body.
Read along...................................
WHAT IS FOOD?
A food is a chemical and biological products that when eaten supplies nutrient to the body system which thus help us to grow and have a healthy living life.Foods are known to get rid of hunger and it could be of animal source or plant source
WHAT ARE THE CLASSES OF FOOD?
There are different classes of food, this classes of food is done according to the nutrient that they supply.
WHAT ARE THESE NUTRIENTS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
***Carbohydrate***
These are large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues and including sugars, starch, and cellulose. They contain hydrogen and oxygen in the same ratio as water (2:1) and typically can be broken down to release energy in the animal body. Examples of food rich in carbohydrate are food known for high sugar content. Carbohydrate rich food supplies energy to the body.
***Protein***
Protein are nitrogenous organic compounds which have large molecules composed of one or more long chains of amino acids and are an essential part of all living organisms, especially as structural components of body tissues such as muscle, hair, etc., and as enzymes and antibodies.Examples of food rich in protein are meat, milk, eggs, and beans and many more. Protein helps to repair worn out tissues and stimulates body growth
***Fat and Oil***
Fats and oils are molecules known as triglycerides, which are esters composed of three fatty acid units linked to glycerol. Fat could be saturated or unsaturated. They could serve as source of energy in absence of carbohydrate and it helps to fight cold penetrating into the body system
***Vitamins***
These are group of organic compounds which are essential for normal growth and nutrition and are required in small quantities in the diet because they cannot be synthesized by the body.Vitamins could be water soluble or fat soluble, they are majorly found in fruits and vegetables. Vitamins are needed for good health ,normal development and proper functioning of the body system.
***Minerals***
These are materials found in foods that are essential for growth and health and do not contain the element carbon. The minerals that are relevant to human nutrition are water, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphate, sulfate, magnesium, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, iodine, selenium, and molybdenum. They are necessary for the maintenance of life and good health.
***Water***
This is a colourless, transparent, odourless, liquid which forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms. It eases digestions and it is important for healthy living.
