SLC-S29/W4 | Biwaï Ben Yaghlen - Spice and Condiment Shop
Spice & condiment frontage— Biwaï Ben Yaghlen Shops (Boumhal)
Hello / Bonjour / Saludos, Steemit!
For this fourth week of the culinary route challenge SLC29-W4 – “La Ruta de Compras Gastronómicas”, I decided to step into a place where aroma becomes a guide and color becomes a map, because a good spice shop is never just a shop, it is a living catalogue of traditions, memories, and daily cooking habits, and the establishment I chose for this experience is Biwaï Ben Yaghlen Shops Boumhal, a well-known stop in Boumhel where shelves and bulk displays come together to offer an impressive range of spices, condiments, grains, legumes, and specialty blends, all arranged in a way that invites you to slow down, look closely, and imagine what each powder, seed, or herb could do inside your own kitchen.
My Visit & The Atmosphere
From the moment I reached the spice corner, I felt the pleasant “market energy” that comes from seeing products exposed in generous quantities, because the large metal bowls and copper containers create that traditional impression of abundance, while the printed labels and organized placement provide the clarity and order that modern shoppers appreciate, and as I moved between the displays I noticed how the section naturally tells a story: legumes next to grains, grains next to spice blends, and spice blends next to pure single-ingredient powders, which makes the act of shopping feel less like picking items randomly and more like building a complete recipe step by step.
Semolina / couscous textures and legumes displayed in large bowls
What makes this type of space special is that it engages multiple senses at once, because the eye is caught by the gradient of yellows, reds, greens, and earthy browns, the nose recognizes familiar notes like cumin and dried herbs, and even the simple sound of scoops moving through grains reinforces that feeling of authenticity, so even if you come with a short shopping list, you often leave with new ideas, new combinations, and a renewed respect for how important seasoning is in shaping the identity of food.
Variety of Products (Spices, Herbs, Blends & Pantry Staples)
The variety here feels broad and practical, because the shop does not limit itself to only “spices” in the strict definition, but also offers everything that supports everyday Tunisian cooking, such as lentils, chickpeas, beans, grains, semolina/couscous textures, and many spice options that can instantly turn simple ingredients into real meals, and this is exactly what makes a spice and condiment shop valuable: it is not just a place to buy flavor, it is a place to buy possibilities.
Beyond legumes, the spice section includes ground spices, whole herbs, and special mixes, and what I particularly appreciated is how the displays make it easy to compare, because you can visually distinguish a warm yellow blend from a deep red pepper mixture, and you can immediately recognize aromatic herbs by their texture and cut, which helps shoppers choose with confidence even before asking questions.

Quality & Presentation
Because so many items are displayed openly in bulk bowls, you can judge freshness and texture with your own eyes, and I found the powders to look vibrant rather than dull, the grains to look clean and uniform, and the overall presentation to feel well maintained, while the presence of scoops and labels makes the experience smooth and practical, especially for customers who want to buy small amounts of several different items rather than large packaged quantities.

Personal Notes: What I Would Buy Again
If I had to build a “core basket” from this visit, I would choose a combination that covers everyday cooking without being repetitive, because cumin brings depth to legumes and meats, thyme and rosemary provide that Mediterranean aromatic backbone, and garlic powder is a fast way to enhance sauces and marinades when you want convenience without losing flavor, and then I would add a warm pepper blend to reflect the Tunisian preference for bold, comforting, slightly spicy profiles that make simple dishes feel complete.

Contest Questions
1) On a scale from 1 to 5, how would you rate the variety of spices and condiments offered by this shop? Explain.
I would rate the variety 5/5, because the selection is not limited to a few classic powders, but expands into a wide and practical range that includes bulk legumes, grains, dried herbs, single spices, and blends, and that combination matters because it means the shopper can create complete meal planning in one place, moving from base ingredients to seasonings naturally, without having to jump between multiple stores.
2) Which spice or condiment never goes missing in your pantry?
The condiment that never disappears from my pantry is cumin, because it is one of the most versatile spices in Tunisian home cooking, capable of enriching lentils, chickpeas, sauces, meat marinades, and even simple egg dishes, and when cumin is present, food almost automatically feels warmer, deeper, and more “finished.”
3) Which spice or condiment do you think defines the gastronomy of your country or city?
In my opinion, the condiment that defines Tunisian gastronomy is the harissa / chili-based spice universe, because even when harissa itself is not added directly to a dish, the influence of red pepper appears through powders, mixes, and cooking habits, shaping that characteristic Tunisian balance between warmth, intensity, and comfort that people instantly recognize.

I invite my friends @uzma4882, @eglis, and @suboohi to participate and share their own spice and condiment shop experience.

Biwaï Ben Yaghlen Shops Boumhal, sell different spices to varieties of people and I am impressed to see that some of the spices are also sold in Nigeria market. Wishing you good luck.
Thank you so much, Josep! Yes, many spices are truly “universal” and that’s what makes this kind of shop even more interesting! I’m glad you enjoyed the visit, and thanks for the good wishe!
Congratulations!
