The americans took the lead after just 13 minutes. O 'hara crossed and Morgan headed the ball into the net with nobody at the back. Ravel's long-range goal in the 20th minute and Holland's powerful shot in the 32nd minute gave the americans a 3-0 halftime lead. Taking advantage of Thailand's physical decline in the second half, the americans started scoring. Mavis, Morgan and ravel all scored twice in the 50th to 56th minutes to make it 7-0. As the outcome became clear, the U.S. coach replaced ravel with veteran Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the last World Cup final. Morgan scored his second hat-trick of the tournament in the 74th minute when he beat the Thai defender in the box. Born in 1998, pew scored and Morgan went on to score twice. In injury time, after Thailand's goal was broken by the United States, the ball was passed to the front field. Lloyd, after receiving Morgan's direct shot, added a strong shot and the score was set at 13-0. Lloyd also became the oldest scorer in the World Cup at the age of 36 years and 330 days.

Morgan became only the second player in women's World Cup history to score five goals in a single game, joining us international michelle akers. Morgan's 5-goal, 3-assist performance also broke the previous women's World Cup record of 3-goal, 2-assist and 5-goal per game. The U.S. women dominated 75 percent of the ball and took 39 shots (Thailand took just two) to score 13 goals. The previous record for the women's World Cup deficit was an 11-0 win over Argentina in the opening game of the 2007 World Cup in hongkou.

In the other two matches, Holland and Sweden both scored late goals. The Netherlands beat New Zealand 1-0 in group E and gilrod headed home in injury time.

Sweden beat Chile 2-0 in group F. Sweden, in spite of its superior strength, was slow to break Chile's goal for the first time in the World Cup. In the 72nd minute, the referee interrupted the game and allowed the players to take shelter in the players' tunnel because of the heavy rain. In the 83rd minute after the resumption of the game, Sweden finally broke the deadlock with a powerful shot from inside the aslani box. Sweden beat Chile 2-0 in injury time after Madeleine's shot from inside the box escaped the defender.
