Manchester United almost guaranteed Champions League Group Stage next season, if they win Europa League

in #football8 years ago

Europa League winners are qualified to Champions League next season automatically, but not necessarily into Group Stage directly, they might have to play through the Qualification Rounds. But not anymore, Real Madrid who are almost one leg into Champions League Final, ensures that if Manchester United won the Europa League, they can directly play in Group stages next season. So What happens to the 4th Place team in Premier League, do they have to miss out next season Champions league? Answer is No, Find out more on UEFA rules at

Good to know ! Go ManU ! GGMU !

Five teams from England in Champions League would be nice. Even though my team, Arsenal, probably won't make it. Do you know how Man utd will be seeded?

Man Utd are probably now focusing on Europa League more than Premier League now to get a Champions League Spot next season. Liverpool and Man Utd might slip in last matches and Arsenal is still not out of the equation, for the good old 4th position.

I would love a 4th position and FA CUP victory, but i doubt both of them.

Awesome, but with Zlatan out they will not win the Europa League :-(

Rashford should come to the rescue again !

PLAYOFF POSSIBILITY !!

There is still a chance that Liverpool and Man City could finish level and face a playoff for the automatic place in the Champions League. One such way this could happen is:

  • Manchester City draw game in hand with West Bromwich Albion 1-1.
  • Liverpool win their remaining games vs. West Ham and Middlesbrough 3-0.
  • Manchester City beat Leicester City and Watford 3-2.
  • These results would leave the two clubs with 76 points, and goal difference of +35 (77 for, 42 against).

There is probably a greater chance, though, of Liverpool and Arsenal finishing with the same record and thus playing off for a place in the Champions League qualifiers, with the loser going into the Europa League group stage.

At present Liverpool are seven points, and five goals, better off than Arsenal. But the Gunners have two games in hand on Liverpool so by winning those the London side could move to within a point with almost identical goal difference.

Arsenal and Liverpool could face a playoff if:

  • Arsenal win their games in hand against Southampton and Sunderland by a combined scoreline of 5-0.
  • Arsenal draw 1-1 at Stoke City, then beat Everton 2-1.
  • Liverpool lose 1-0 at West Ham, then beat Middlesbrough 3-1.
  • These results would leave the two clubs with 73 points, and goal difference of +30 (74 for, 44 against), thus possibly joint fourth.
