Two fathers in the dugout, their sons on the field
On January 18 of this year, the incident took place. In the Netherlands' Eredivisie, Feyenoord and Sparta Rotterdam played football. Rotterdam's Stadion Feyenoord witnessed an unusual incident that day. On that day, two father-son couples were discovered on the pitch and in the dugout. Sam Stein, the son of Sparta coach Maurice Stein, was on the pitch while his father was on the bench. Feyenoord coach Robin van Persie, a former Dutch great, and his son Shakil van Persie were the other father-son duo. However, the sons of both managers were Feyenoord players. Shakil van Persie's kid, who entered the game as a substitute, also scored a fantastic goal with a bicycle kick.
However, Sparta, led by Maurice Stein, won the game 4-3. In the Rotterdam derby, Feyenoord tied the score with two goals from Shakil in the 87th and 88th minutes after Sparta had taken a 3-1 lead. Joshua Kitolan's goal in extra time gave Sparta the victory.
Another instance of seeing two father-son pairs as coaches and players in the same match in top-level football is the English Premier League. Darren Ferguson, the son of Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson, was also a player for his father's squad on August 28, 1992, during the game between Nottingham Forest and United. While his son Nigel was on the pitch, Brian Clough was in the opposing Forest's dugout. United won the match 2-0.
Ferguson's United won the Premier League for the first time since its start that season. After finishing 22nd out of 22 teams in the league, Clough's Forest was demoted to the second division.
