Beauty in Math - Fractals #6 (fractal music)

Yes another fractal post. I'll post more microscope videos soon though.... and other things.

The fractals I have posted so far are graphical representations of complex equations.
I could have posted an endless stream of numbers but that would be a bit boring.
With the arrival of computers and display screens, equations could not only be evaluated quickly, but their outputs could be displayed in a variety of helpful ways.
Before computers, mathematicians were well aware that certain types of equations or algorithms gave strange results, but plotting numbers on paper was slow and painful. As soon as they could do it on a screen, things got really interesting. I've included a video at the end which is old and a little corny in parts but it still contains some cool stuff for those interested in fractals - not just the type I play around with.

So numbers can represent shape and color, but there is no reason why you can't take those same numbers and represent them as sound. There are in fact quite a few fractal musical artists around. I have only played with this idea using software called Photosounder. Rather than use the numbers directly, it is taking the fractal images and generating sound from those. There are other ways to do it however.

Here are three videos I made with this software using my own fractals. Some freaky sounds came out!

I used an old version of Photosounder. There is a newer one currently available. Oh and it doesn't just do fractals. You can put almost any image in.
