Feature Request: Downloadable Post Histories
Hey folks,
regarding backups, wouldn't you like the ability to download your Steemit post/comment history? I certainly would. Just imagine a more elegant way of doing it, rather than you copy-pasting each individual post. Bleh, I'm too lazy for that. So what if there was an option to generate PDF files, for example. Wouldn't that be nice? I'm not talking about whole context trees either, but the content of the corresponding tabs already existing within your Steemit profile.
I'm not sure if this was brought up before, but if you have been writing a lot this might be as relevant to you as it is to me. So what do you think? Am I missing something, or is there a better way of doing it? What would you suggest? I figured I should be asking here, before making any half-baked proposals somewhere else.

That's a good idea. I always save everything twice or three times, just to be on the safe side ;-)) What does @moecki or @the-gorilla say? You have to know, they can do magic ;-)))
Three times? That's a lot. I guess it makes sense though given how much work you're putting in. Exactly why I think some sort of backup would make sense.
Btw. technically each post and all the consequent edits are on the blockchain, right?

Yes, that would be helpful. What I did save is a part of the links in my notebook simply to find them back if needed. I don't print much lately but at times a printed version is helpful (so is an index in my account). I assume that if a link can be sent to X and whatsoever it's also possible to download it.

But seriously, I like to print a lot for record keeping. It tends to last a lot longer than digital stuff, unless those printouts go straight into the furnace. Even it's just an digital copy it's still an additional level of redundancy. The X thing is a good point.
I'm not sure if I want my stuff to be downloaded by somebody else though, unless I explicitly allow them to. I guess hackers and such will find ways to parse your data either way, but I could see this potentially enabling low level stalkers.
Printed on paper will for sure last longer plus it reads differently and I already know I will start editing again. 😁
I look forward to collect/print my stories. Perhaps I better start with it.. One print per day? A great overview of my craziness at the end of the year (comments included or separated no diary needed).

Typing answers can be tiresome I thought about givind up on posting except for the most necessary.
Back to the print option I managed with some abracadabra (phone blah blah) to print domething I needed Canva for the make it look better. No, am no Canva fan it's more the "need". I rather post without (such a waste of time).

I lost a lot of stories, writings I would like to save but the thing is that it is gone or can't be found back which I find frustrating the more because complains about posting elsewhere are an unwritten rule and I hate the never ending fights why I do what I do. Computers crash, so do hard disks,usb sticks and I don't consider the cloud, any cloud or platform a good storage.
I like to find back what I wrote and I need more than one backup. Printing is the best even if I have to type it again. It would be helpful if the link is added to the print.
I lost many photos as well, saved on cds which couldn't be read a few years later. Next I started printing them again and back are the photo albums and wooden photo boxes. Most I throw away these days. I cannot store everything.
If the power is switched off all access is gone.
If the witnesses stop the same and the blockchain falls apart...
Are parts already deleted? It feels as if "the blockchain storing forever" is as true as crypto is cheaper because there are no (bank) fees or one EU, one euro and everywhere the apple has the same prize. I still search for that apple after all those years.
Let's see what can be realized but I believe it's time to collect, copy-paste my stuff and print. At least one per day..
I noticed I wrote 39,000+ posts with this account only and 3900+ comments.
There's another account, three communities, I help the freewriters and actively comment as a steemcurator. By now three SC team accounts benefited from it.
My poetric answer as SC8 to an entry in WOX even received several upvotes.
I can make books about several topics. Tales, Commenting, Art, SC, freewrite, fighting, Steemit and...
It will be hard to proof what you wrote is yours and when. I add the date for me (unless I forget and I make a typo). Words like ideas are quickly stolen. AI is one of the biggest thieves.

Glad you mentioned proof. That's a very important point actually. Especially when you're starting to become a little more serious about writing. That said, it not even about doing groundbreaking stuff and having delusions of grandeur, but your content being yours (relatively speaking). Meaning it's nice to have some receipts.
Your print-outs are beautiful, but much more fancy than whatever I'm doing. I'm super utilitarian about it and mostly just convert my digital files into unformated text and bang them through a black and white printer. One second...

This is an older page of something I call "fragments" because it's mostly just that. Fragmented ideas, notes, occasional rambles, world events, and so on. At one point wrote these on an UTAX Starwriter 80, because I liked the feel of it and thought using a dedicated machine for notes was a good idea. Actually I got four typewriters in total. Three of them electrical ones running on StarOffice.

In terms of the fragments I've consistently been changing up the format. Sometimes due to circumstance, like obscure printer issues in combination with my preferred text editor acting up, other times because that's how it evolved. I really enjoy the sticky notes, but it's a lot of work and too expensive imo.
With the numbers on top correlating to the dates I can flag days just by snipping the future with a pair of scissors. If I was feeling like it I guess I could still add stick notes. Either way I'm getting lost in the wheats here.
There's definitely a degree of uncertainty involving everything digital. Clouds, keychains, even just random files. In terms of Steemit I'm still not certain what kind of format I'm looking for exactly, it's kind of complicted. With the fragments each day is an individul file, which makes it easier to edit. Probably part of the reason why don't like single files. But I think with 40k posts is too much for either or. That's probably multiple novel length books.
The thieving with AI is one of my worries too, all more reason to have receipts. Maybe there will be some thing eventually allowing writers to reverse engineer where AI got some of its content from.
Overall you are more organized than me. I use pen and paper and make notes which pile up (what you call snippets included). Some I work out others have to wait because I always hear, see something else to write about.
What I showed I mainly did because a part of my stories were a gift, written for someone and I couldn't share/give it in a different way (a link isn't a real gift) so let's say these are NFTs LOL
I can't do that with everything I write since it's a hell of job to copy and past it that way and make it fit (some stories I did and they have 2 or 3 pages).
I also joined #nanowrimo 2 or 3 times so the parts of those novels are here somewhere (I typed for the entire month about 2500 words per day on my phone, if you like to know yes indeed my hand did hurt but it is doable if no one disturbs. I used the daily prompts provided by @ freewritehouse). How to lay hand on it? I saved it a several times and lost a part but it is mine and not Steemit's they never liked, read or upvoted anyway, same for the stories I post in Tales & Stories. I can not even find my own epistles back if I search here or google how odd is that? It wouldn't surprise me if it's deleted/vanished gone or buried underneath a pile of diaries.).
Screenshot printing is no option?
For sure many don't care about losing what they post here but it's important to me, to you and I am sure many more. I just hope it's not possible that if that option is given others can also use it to print what you wrote.
Now we mention plagiarism, I assure the accounts cannot be protected against copying texts like some sites have (including the bankapp I use).

I'm largely not that organized, I just keep adding to the pile. The fragments are about as orderly as it gets, which isn't saying much honestly. Lately I've been experimenting with nested notes and indexing things. I haven't reached peak Unabomber just yet, but the great work hasn't been finished yet heavy breathing. Just joking of course, I'm a normal guy doing normal things.
Writing 2500 words a day on a phone is damn impressive. I honestly need my keyboard to function. Was doing steno for a while and injured myself in process, which probably sounds even more weird than the joke about the great work. Steno is pretty underrated actually, but it will never become popular.
Oh, have you thought about using speech to text maybe? Heard there's apps that transcribe your voice.
It's not my intention to make you worried although I admit I am worried (the info about what happens if the witnesses stop is given by xpilar in Talkchannel a few days ago) although this is what I am worried about and wrote about in the past years.

Years ago I worked with Dragon it worked great for my job and didn't took long to train it for my voice. I tried to do it with my phone but it only worked with the old one which can no longer open the internet (only good for Telegram and calling). I also noticed that what I tried only seem to work with one language which isn't always very helpful. Another problem I face is that if I type it's in the way I think. If I have to speak my texts I write different which is at times frustrating especially if it comes to stories. Somehow speaking interferes with what I have in mind, perhaps because I rarely speak? Can be it's gone if I train it more but I doubt it.
Steno is handy, I learned it too. Kind of pity it's no longer. Good for my notes and if I don't want others to read it. Is steno still taught? If it comes to it I like writing with pen and paper. I still do it even if a sheet has to be filled out.
I gues if we print we have a pile as well but it might look better in we archive in a box or so LOL
I better check how much ink is left to print at least 27 times....
edit: P.s. I made a screenshot (prt sc/printscreen) and printed that. Good enough for certain comments.
There's the Plover* project, which is pretty great for steno. Basically the app converts stenography chords into plain english, using modifiable dictionaries. You don't need an expensive steno machine either, just a keyboard with n-key-rollover or a steno keyboard (they are somewhat affordable).
I have little experience with Dragon, but I remember it being expensive as heck. It's nice but yeah, takes a little bit of getting use to. Besides that I've experimented with voice records, which is probably even more of a pain in the ass than actually writing things out in the first place. Nobody is going to listen to themselves rambling for hours at a time, even if you're bookmarking things. At least I won't. I hate listening to my own voice.
In terms of your voice being different of how you write I find that kind of ironic. I mean, given how people keep looking for their own voice. The whole steno phase of mine was kinda about that, like an attempt of the writing process becoming more conversational.

Speech to text apps? I have been using it for sometimes, basically when works need me to re-type large amount of text. It does help. But so far I only have it on my Android phone, since I have no microphone attached the the PC and laptop. I create the text on my phone, save it as a text file, send it to PC or laptop.
What app are you using? In terms of the PC I like Read a Loud, because it's free and it works, but I've grown a little more paranoid about browser plug-ins more recently and keep it contained to a dedicated instance. Nuance Dragon would be nice, partially because you could use that in tandem with Fade In and simulate a table read.
