Excuse 37:

“We had unexpected company.”

Apparently this renter decided that it was more important to look good to unexpected company by entertaining them lavishly than to keep his obligations with the landlord. Consequently, this really isn't a very good excuse by itself. At a minimum, it should be coupled with a promise to pay at a certain time, and it would help even further if you at least gave your landlord some of the rent money now. Don't be surprised if the landlord wants late charges added if you use this excuse.
