🎮 [Retro Game] - ✨ 💀 💿 ORIGINAL CD (and it works!): Blood Omen, Legacy of Kain (1997) 💿 💀 ✨ / @Archdruid Gaming Contest [Gaming Decades: The 90s] 💕 👌 - By: @Tesmoforia.

This contest’s purpose is to celebrate and honor a decade of videogaming, inviting the community each time so all share posts about videogames they got to know, play and loved in any possible way (the entry can be an anecdote, a fan art, a fanfic and even Cosplay, it’s wonderful >7<!).

This time the Contest is about the 90s, and I chose one of my treasures:

Since we were kids, my brother and I especially loved tittles about supernatural beings and plots about mystery, horror or suspense; but we were respectively born during 1989 (me) and he during 1992, that’s why it wouldn’t be possible for us to play until the end of the 90´s and the start of 2000, so we would have access to games with plots that would be the most interesting to us.

This CD was borrowed from a loved friend and neighbor, who would end gifting it to us after a while. This game has survived 4 times moving houses (always well-kept between our freaky/otaku or collectable things) and it’s in perfect condition, it still works and it’s almost new.

I remember the day it arrived to our house and we were able to install it on the PC we shared, It felt like having pure gold on our hands.

Just the synopsis and the mini- text on the back of the package impressed us a lot:

"Travel through time to the depraved lands of Nosgoth in search of your killers and enjoy thousands of full-detailed screens and more than 100 hours of dark gothic adventures"

"As the Lord of the Undead, you must drink the blood of your enemies to survive. If you must flee, transform in one of your sinister shapes: wolf, nobleman, bat or mist"

"Engage in fierce battles with 170 horrible enemies, eight kinds of weapons/armors and more than 20 objects and insane spells, each one of them illustrated with a bloody and unrepeatable graphic"

"Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain" would occupy many hours of our time after school, and It would become the reason behind many battles to monopolize the PC, for longer periods of time than what could be considered as healthy.

The emotion of playing it would only come back with titles such as "Metal Gear Solid" , which also has a more mature and ”polemic” plot and script if we take the current time it was released.

If I had to say what is "Blood Omen" about, I would like to say that the game starts with Kain’s murder (that’s it, straight to the point), a nobleman of Coorhagen family who has lived with any worry and sinking on plain luxury; during a journey, he arrives to a hostal in Ziegsturhl town, where he is assaulted by a group of bandits, and killed.

On the other world, and impaled with the sword of his murderer, Kain’s soul is unable to rest in peace due his needs of revenge. After a while, he meets Mortanius, a necromancer, who offers him a new life as a vampire.

In his search for answers, Kain will be involved in a plot full of manipulation, and we will notice that since the very beginning, his birth wasn’t an ordinary event, that his murdering wasn’t a fortuitous event, and that his fate is closely tied to Nosgoth Pillars, center of the world, reason of the balance between all forces, harmony and life.

Kain will know the truth about those pillars, that had been corrupted and will assume the mission of seeking the members of the Circle of Nine, a group of sorcerers that protected the Sacred Pillars of Nosgoth at first, but who had gone insane.

Since the beginning, the game makes it clear that the protagonist isn’t good (nobody is good), and that’s why, your common sense is going to be contradicted for morality and justice topics being transgressed.

For example and this is one of the scenes that I remember that marked me the most from the game at first:

When you get closer to the people chained to the walls in some of the scenes, they would get altered, and start twisting quickly, sobbing and crying.

When there’s no more blood to drink from them, they would sight and die, fading; the thing is a little sadist if you consider that those chained souls will be your main source of feeding along the game, and also!, if you are cautious enough, you can enter on family houses and drink the blood from people while they sleep.

The game’s aura is really dark and unnerving, sometimes very somber, and still, it was able to make you feel (ironically) comfortable, and that’s exactly what makes it addictive; its dynamic is very comfortable and keeps your attention trapped on it.

The hours of complete afternoons invested in the game were worth it, when you would reach new objects and skills, the game would turn the double of interesting and addictive, but also difficult, the game was demanding more and more caution, because your actions quickly increased the risk of causing a fuss, causing mobs and enemies to follow you everywhere to hunt you down.

As we were moving along the game, things happened faster and faster, there were more enemies, we didn’t get much time to think and the whole world would turn into some kind of labyrinth.

Besides, we were also really young back them, so we didn’t get the plot that well and we would get close in the succession of things happening in the script.

Still, "Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain" has a very especial place in our memories, and we hope we’ll be able to play it again, this time being serious enough in order to complete it, just as we were able to complete "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver" (for PlayStation), a spectacular tittle were we could see Kain again, and what has happened to the vampire race after all the events, chronologically placed at the end of Legacy of Kain".
