Let me start this review with a warning. Don’t watch the video or play the game if you have epilepsy. Seriously.

Gameplay

Now that this warning is out of the way, lets get directly into this quick review! And as usually we will start with the games mechanics.
But when it comes to main mechanics of the game, there really isn’t that much to talk about here. It’s just a first person shooter. You have a few different guns, but all very standard and you just go around shooting people. The one thing that could be considered a bit different about GAME OF THE YEAR 420BLAZEIT is the fact that I feel like the game has a bit of aim-assist going on.

And the only other real mechanic in game is your health-pool. The first thing you need to know about the health pool is the fact that you can push it way beyond 100. The way you do that (and now you heal) is by eating packs of Doritos and drinking cans of Mountain Dew that are all over the place. Seriously, they are everywhere.
So you can see that the game doesn’t really have that much substance to it, but that isn’t really that much of an issue, because the point of the game isn’t that much about the gameplay. It’s about the parody of the current Twitch and Youtube gaming culture and we will get into that in the next segment.

Graphics

So the graphics. The game itself looks like a 10 year old first person shooter. But as stated previously, this isn’t a game that is trying to impress you. And furthermore, you won’t see most of the screen half of the time anyways – because of the memes!
As GAME OF THE YEAR 420BLAZEIT is a parody of the current meme culture that is rampant specially on Twitch, it just fills the screen with memes that were popular at some point inside the wider gaming scene. So you will see plenty of 360noscope memes, the dog from Duck Hunt game, explosions everywhere and everything you can see happening so often on Twitch.
On top of that, the screen will just be flickering with different colors most of the time – that’s the reason behind the epilepsy warning BTW – making everything that much less clear and harder to see.

Music

Music in GAME OF THE YEAR 420BLAZEIT is just blasting all over the place, it uses all the common tropes, where whenever something happens, it just starts being even louder and louder until you feel like you should tear your ears off.

Performance

Amazingly, performance wise GAME OF THE YEAR 420BLAZEIT is better then many triple A titles out there these days. Yes the fact that it’s a really simple and small game helps with that very much, but still, triple A games should be better optimized so a game done as a parody joke by someone who was obviously high while making it aren’t better in performance.

Conclusion

So, in conclusion: GAME OF THE YEAR 420BLAZEIT is a fun little venture for anyone with 20 minutes of free time who wants to realize that some parts of the current gaming culture are just ridiculous. The amount of memes streamers use is just stupidly high and I specially loathe the loud music that a lot of streamers use – specially when they get donations. It fun for 5 minutes, then it’s just irritating and GAME OF THE YEAR 420BLAZEIT shows exactly that. Since it’s free I’ll recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have epilepsy.
