Micro Machines World Series - A Quick Review and Hints Guide
Like many people in their 30s, I was a massive fan of Micro Machines on the Mega Drive. I stumbled across World Series last week a day before pre-release and immediately bought in on a whim for £22.
So is it any good? Well, it's OK. If you have a load of money, it's not a waste of money: You'll get a few days fun out of it. But honestly, it's pretty paper thin. There are 10 tracks; that's the main problem. It's nowhere near enough. They've spent too much time messing about with skins for the cars and magic boxes of gifts to open, presumably in the hope that you'll keep coming back to the game to win / open them. However, there's not really any point coming back if you're just playing the same tracks over and over again. It gets old pretty quick.
There are 3 modes. 2 racing based and one battle based.
I thought the battle mode looked fun on the trailer - they have capture the flag (where both teams have a flag and you have to take it to your base), then a bomb mode where you just have one bomb between the teams and you have to take that to the other team's base. Both fine as concepts but honestly it's really boring. The maps are far too big so basically you're just chasing people around not actually engaging, plus the games go on FOREVER!
Racing wise, you have standard 5 lap races and then an elimination race, the same as old school Micro Machines.
The racing is fine. I've seen some people say the handing is too hard. That's not correct. The handing on SOME of the cars is awful. If you choose anything with tracks not wheels, the handling is fine. I think that's what will put a lot of people off the game. They'll choose the Jaguar E Type and spin all over the place and give up. That's probably why the standard of racing is honestly really poor.
Choose the snow plough and if you can have any concept of a racing line, you can probably win half the races you enter and come top 3 in 80% (out of 12).
That's pretty much it, because that's pretty much all the game is! Basically it's got the content of a $2 mobile game. It's relatively fun but that's about it!
4/5 for gameplay because it does exactly what you expect.
2/5 for value because it is so paper thin.
