Good news! Scientists claimed to have genetically modified pigs which are resistant to swine flu virus

in #genetic6 years ago

Its good news for all pork lovers. The scientists and researchers have claimed to have genetically modified pigs which are now resistant against the deadly swine flu virus known as Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome(PRRS). A group of scientist from the University of Edinburgh's Roslin Institute, Scotland, UK have confirmed it.

Mechanism of Gene editing

PRRS virus generally attacks a specific receptor present in the cells of pigs known as CD163 and by removing a small portion of the CD163 gene they have changed their genetic code. Precise gene editing techniques are implemented to perform this task. Once the surgery is performed, the pigs were again exposed to the virus, but the researchers found that none of the pigs have shown any sign of ill health. The blood samples were also collected from the exposed pigs and none of their blood samples have shown any traces of infection as well.

Adverse effects

After altering the genetic code it is seen that the animals have not shown any kind of unnatural behavior due to a genetic modification in their cellular level or any sort of adverse effect on their health.

Benefits

Scientists believe that this breakthrough will have a major impact on entire pig farming industry worldwide and will possibly help in saving billions of dollars which are lost earlier in those industries. Its been a remarkable achievement for the entire farming industry.

Conclusion

The PRRS virus was first identified and Isolated in the year 1991 and is also known as blue-ear pig virus. The killer virus is known to induce Breathing trouble once infected. It affects the lungs of young pigs and causes repeated reproductive failure in breeding mothers. Due to this reason, it has created a sensation in the entire pig farming industry which cost them billions of dollars annually.
This major breakthrough will definitely help the entire industry in saving a huge ton of money annually and will also provide a way to reproduce PRRS resistant pigs which will be well secured to be consumed by us. Thus I congratulate the entire team of researchers and scientists from the University of Edinburgh's Roslin Institute for such an accomplished work. let's hope to have this solution be leveraged to the entire world seeing the benefits associated with it.
