Conversations of the coalition of Germany: the conservatives of Merkel and the agreement of SPD

in #germany7 years ago

Germany is ready to emerge from months of political stalemate after the conservatives of Angela Merkel (CDU / CSU) finally agreed on a coalition agreement with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD).

The negotiators agreed to the division of the key ministries, one of the last obstacles to forming a government.

It could end more than four months of disputes since inconclusive elections in September.

But the agreement must still be approved by the members of the SPD.

Many in the party fear that re-entering a coalition with CDU / CSU could damage it in the long term.

At a joint press conference on Wednesday, Chancellor Merkel said the agreement laid the foundation for a "good and stable government."

SPD leader Martin Schulz thanked the Conservatives for doing what he said were difficult commitments.

In a tweet, he said the deal "achieved a lot for the people" and that he would recommend that members of his party accept it.

Schulz has also said he will resign as leader of the SPD in March, according to reports. He will be replaced by the former Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Andrea Nahles.
