Our Life Story | Chapter 30 – Don’t underestimate the Grand Canyon!

in #grandcanyon7 years ago (edited)

Since Joshua Tree was such a nice place, our next destination had some big shoe´s too fill.

Next stop: The Grand Canyon!!

We underestimated the size of the American landscapes a couple of times now, lol. But sure, we knew the Grand Canyon was big, really big!

We came into the National park trough the south entrance. While driving and seeing our navigation say it was “only 10” miles until we reached the Grand Canyon, we we’re looking at each other saying where is it? Something that size should be visible from far we thought, well it’s quite amazing. It just isn’t. At least not from the side we entered the area.

But that’s the beauty of it. Amazing how something that big can be hidden so well.

While we we’re standing on the edge of the Canyon, we we’re thinking about driving to the so called Sky Walk. A horseshoe shaped framework with glass on top overhanging 21 meters (70ft) from the Canyon rim. Not for the faint hearted because looking down lets you see deep into this enormous Canyon.

So, after doing some more research on where this skywalk was actually located, we came to a conclusion….

DAMN…!! We did it again…..Will we ever learn?!

We again underestimated how big everything is.

We we’re thinking it would be a 2 hour drive max. Turns out it was more like a 6 to 7 hours’ drive from where we were standing. Too far too drive for us that day. So we didn’t make it too the skywalk but instead had a lovely walk alongside of the south rim on the Grand Canyon.

A really stunning and beautiful place. But we did had some mixed feelings about it, it really is a shame everything has to be so damn touristy.

It’s really hard to enjoy the true beauty of nature when you are constantly tripping over truckloads of tourists, busses, hotels, motels, gift shops, paved walking routes, more giftshops, more busses, more tourist, did I forgot to mention more hotels? Oh yeah, more giftshops, more……..

It almost felt like we we’re walking in a big theme park.

It probably was because we just didn’t find the right secluded spots. But we think it’s kind of sad that among all this beautiful nature, humans have to come along and make money off everything…. It takes away some of the real beauty this amazing canyon has to offer.

Don’t get me wrong, it still is a amazing place with a well-deserved spot as one of the 7  natural world wonders. If you ever have the chance to visit this world wonder, be sure to do so and wait until the sun starts go down beneath the horizon.

Still a busy time at all the viewing points but well worth the waiting time. You just got too see it for yourself!
