Why Knowing Your Blood Group is More Than Just a Lab Result | By @jahidhassan
Hello Steemit family!
As a Medical Technologist, one of the most basic yet life-saving tests I perform every day is Blood Grouping. Whether it's for a surgery, a pregnancy, or an emergency blood transfusion, this simple test determines the compatibility of life itself.
Today, I want to briefly explain the science and the importance of knowing your blood type.
The ABO and Rh System
Our blood group is determined by the presence or absence of specific antigens on the surface of our red blood cells.
Group A: Has A antigens.
Group B: Has B antigens.
Group AB: Has both A and B antigens (Universal Receiver).
Group O: Has no antigens (Universal Donor).
The Rh Factor: This is the "+" or "-" you see. It’s an additional protein. If you have it, you're positive; if not, you're negative.
Why Is It So Important?
Emergency Transfusions: In a critical accident, every second counts. Knowing your group helps doctors act faster.
Safe Pregnancy: If a mother is Rh-negative and the baby is Rh-positive, it can lead to complications. Early detection prevents this.
Helping Others: When you know your group, you know exactly who you can help by donating blood.
My Experience in the Lab:
I often see people getting confused about their groups because they had a test years ago. My professional advice is: Always have a verified blood group card in your wallet. A small card can be a lifesaver in an unexpected situation.
Do you know your blood group? If not, visit a lab today!
