Purpose and Importantance of Health Examinations

It is important that you take care of yourself not only when you are sick but also when you are well. Some people avoid going to the clinic. However, doctors, dentists and nurses are the health personnel who care for your well-being. Trust them because they are your friends. They conduct regular physical examinations to ensure your health.

Some disease get worse because we do not realize the importance of having a regular health examination and follow up. The screening test helps the doctor diagnose health problems, thus preventing their occurrence. It also helps you observe proper health habits.

The purpose of health examination is to assess the health condition of the persons. This is a routine check-up done by the physician, nurse and dentist.

Vision Test

Vision is very important. It allows people to interact freely with their environment and enjoy the beauty of life around them. In vision testing, the person is asked to sit six feet away from the Snellen Chart.

Covering one eye, the person identifies the letters on the Snellen Chart. The person takes three readings, right eye, left eye and both eyes. Beyond 20/20 vision indicates the presence of an eye defect.


Height Measurement

Height is measured using a meterstick which is placed against the wall. The person need to removes his/her shoes and stands erect with heels together, buttocks and head against the wall and eyes looking straight.


Weight Measurement

To measure the weight, a weighing scale is used. Bare footed, the persons stands on the platform and reads the recorded weight.


Hearing Test

The assessment of the ears includes direct inspection of the external ear as well as the capability of the inner ear to interpret sounds. A tuning fork, stopwatch or whisper is used for the purpose. To use the tuning fork, hold it at the base and tap or strike gently to produce vibration. Inability to hear the sound of the instrument indicates that the student has impaired hearing.


Dental Examination

The dentist performs the dental examination to assess the total health condition of the teeth. A follow up is needed to correct any dental problem of the person. Tooth extraction is also done to persons who have defective teeth.


Pulse Rate

This is done by placing the index finger and the middle finger near the wrist. A person who has a pulse rate beyond 80-100 beats per minute may have possible heart abnormalities.


Medical Examination

Examination of the heart and lungs are done by the doctor to diagnose any occurrence of health problems among the person and the doctor gives a referral to the person who need a medical attention.
