Improving Medical Microbiology Diagnosis and Research through the use of Automation.

in #health7 years ago

HOW IT ALL STARTED
The technical basis for studying the morphology of microbes was first established almost 300years ago when Anton Van Leeuwenhoek described the first bacteria he saw using a microscope.

IMPROVEMENT IN MICROBIOLOGY
Rapid methods and Automation are emerging. Rapid methods and Automation are being developed and are geared towards improving early detection, isolation, characterisation and enumeration of several microorganisms in all kind of samples.

WHY AUTOMATION?
The importance of Automation in our present day Laboratory practice cannot be ignored. Automation in Microbiology play important roles in:

  1. Reducing Turn Around Time required for diagnosis, isolation, classication and treatment.
  2. Accurate and Precise Lab. test results.
  3. Enhancing Laboratory Quality control System.
  4. Creating Informatics Continuum( Quality control system, LIS function, Results verification and interpretation).
  5. Reducing nosocomial infection( direct contact with samples are minimised).

Med Lab Tech here. Never used the DiversiLab System, how do you like it?

bioMérieux provides the equipment, reagents and software for microbial genotyping of bacteria and fungi. Packaged together, these components are referred to as the DiversiLab System.

The DiversiLab System for DNA fingerprinting and analysis is a powerful tool for tracking the spread and source of microbial infection, contamination, or epidemics natural and man-made. Based on patented rep-PCR technology, microbial isolates can quickly and accurately be distinguished at the subspecies and strain level.

The DiversiLab System employs the following simple steps to generate unique, reproducible fingerprints for each of your microbial samples.

DNA Extraction:
Extract DNA from isolated cultures.

rep-PCR Amplification:
Amplify samples using rep-PCR and the appropriate DiversiLab DNA Fingerprinting Kits.

Detection:
Separate fragments via electrophoresis performed in a microfluidics DNA LabChip.

Data Analysis:
Analyze data in real time with reports accessible via an individual secured website.

Where are you?

Hahaa looking at your profile we're kinda like kindred spirits lol. Im located in VA, you?
