FOODS AND SUBSTANCES THAT CAN CAUSE BAD BREATH

in #health7 years ago (edited)

Oral hygiene is non negotiable when it comes to hygienic decency.

Dental hygiene is a very essential part of the human body hygiene.

Poor dental hygiene leaves much to be desired of any decent individual. It is often a stigma not easily shaken off.

There is no 'conversation-stopper', 'date-killer', 'hug-ruiner', 'close-whisper ender' and 'kiss-destroyer' as terrible as a bad-breath.

Halitosis is one strange dental condition on its own, which requires serious oral and medical attention.

But then, there is the strange scenario where certain foods we eat have the potential of leaving a foul smell lingering in our breath, after consuming them.

Certain foods and substances that can cause bad breath

1 * Coffee and other beverages

Our morning coffee is very essential in keeping us energetic and ready for the day’s activities. However, drinking too much of coffee in a day can leave your teeth brownish and unhealthy. Also, it can cause dry mouth, which allows bacteria to survive without saliva washing it away, thereby causing bad breath.

2 * Red Wine

Red wine contains sugar. Consuming it on a daily can leave your teeth with cavities. Also, its reddish hue can leave brownish colouration or stains on your teeth which can lead to bad breath.

3 * Garlic, Onions, Rich Gravies and Spicy Foods

It might be essential to avoid such foods completely, when out on lunch or dinner with friends or that ‘special someone’. You definitely do not want to come off with a foul breath each time you open your mouth, even when trying to call ‘waiter’! So, if you must enjoy spicy meals when out, you might have to be proactive. A good move would be to go along with a toothbrush and paste. A quick dive towards the bathroom after the meal, and brushing off some of that pungent smell, might be worth it, as you enjoy your time out.

4 * Tuna and Fish

Fishes such as tuna are very delicious cuisines, but they leave a lingering stench on the breath. If you can’t brush your teeth after having a tuna dish or fish delicacy, then pop some sugar-free gum into that oral closet of yours to freshen things up. Chewing gum aids saliva stimulation which flushes out some food particles that might be stuck on your teeth.

5 * Lemon and similar juices

Lemon as we know, is very good for the body as it is filled with vitamin C. However, taking lemon juice or lime juice with sugar regularly can cause tooth problems, due to its acidic nature, and can lead to tooth decay, causing bad breath.

6 * Beetroot and other scented vegetables

This is a very healthy vegetable, and is rich in various nutrients. But regularly consuming it raw can cause stains in your teeth due to its deep-red colouration. Such stains if not taken care off by proper dental hygiene can lead to bad breath as well.

NOTE: Avoiding or abstaining from all these foods does not and will not guarantee, a clean mouth or sweet smelling breath.

Proper dental hygiene which entails proper brushing of the teeth at least twice a day, is still the ultimate.

Regular oral routine can definitely help your breath smell nice, even if you consume a lot of scented foods. But thorough brushing of the teeth to get rid of food particles hiding in the massive wilderness of the mouth, would go a long way in tackling the ugly menace of bad breath.

@geetasnani .... Remedy for bad breath?
Well, that was inferred through out the post. Proper Dental Hygiene is the sure remedy for bad breath. Anything less, is always a let down for the person in question.

How hygiene? You have to specify. Gargling with mouthwash etc. Or salt water:)

Avoiding them is personal assassination. Highly nutritional food byproducts produce offensive odour.

Very True. Hence, the need to be proactive about where and when to consume them. And how to tackle the offensive odour.
Lolz @ personal assassination.....
