What? Introduction to Wellness SNiPs

"Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth."
- UC Davis
"...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
- The World Health Organization

Welcome to the first edition of Wellness SNiPs!

This will be a short format wellness blog to help kickstart you into a "well-style" that works for you.

The headers will be the TL;DR summary statements of the post. While Wellness SNiPs will be written in short-format, if you're REALLY pressed for time just read the headers which will give you the what, why, and how summarized.

Why? To improve health and wellness.

This section will give you the reasons why changing the 'what' matters to your health.

There is so much information today, lengthy studies, multiple moving parts, this diet or that diet - in short too much information to synthesize and apply to everyday life.

The truth about achieving wellness is adopting one new healthy habit at a time. Slowly and surely your health will improve and the habits won't feel like you are depriving yourself, but rather empowering your life.

This approach is for you if:

  • Every diet you've ever been on has failed.
  • You're looking for optimal health and wellness that can be sustained over a lifetime in order to mitigate the chances of chronic disease.
  • If you're interested in improving the quality of your life day by day.

How? One small habit at a time.

This section will give tips and tricks on how to achieve the 'what' from the first section.

The weight management market worldwide is upwards of $215 billion dollars with 30% of the global population being obese or overweight(1).

In a metric where you DON'T want to be in first place, the U.S. leads the way with 70% of the population being obese or overweight. Spending an estimated $70 billion dollars this year alone on weight loss products and services(2,4).

Costs associated with chronic diseases (cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's, and epilepsy) will be well over a trillion dollars, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and that encompasses only the direct medical costs, but doesn’t include costs from lost productivity (3).

We can avoid a majority of those expenses and live a full life free of disease if we incorporate small healthy changes which add up over the years.

As we all know, if you don't have your health, everything else goes by the wayside.

Pitfalls

This section will address the common mistakes and misconceptions surrounding each of the topics while providing ways to get around them.

Comments: copy/paste your answer into a reply

Since this blog is meant to be short and sweet this section will give you ready-made replies you can copy/paste as a kind of poll about the content. If you care to elaborate further PLEASE do!

So let's try it!

Here are the Reply's (copy paste and add additional comments if you wish):

Thanks to @penderis, the superhero, for helping me flesh out the idea for this series and create graphics that don't suck. Thanks also to @monchhichi23 for giving me her opinion and taking a first look.

I also owe special appreciation to the awesome people over at Steemit Creators' Guild especially @ravenruis for proofreading and @jrswab for running such an awesome discord and being kind enough to take his time to weigh in on this concept.

But thanks for using the cut and paste comment - 😜

looking forward to these!!!!!!! :)

especially now that you're making kimchi.
hehehehehehe

thanks Tamale! ; hahhahahahahahahahaha

cool... sounds good.

This is a great idea! I try to eat in a somewhat healthy/conscious manner by watching saturated fats, staying away from "high fructose corn syrup," opting for "lower sodium" and things like that. But, I have definitely slipped in recent years in some other ways... "How did those donuts end up in my shopping cart?" 😁

Donuts? There must have been some mistake, or someone mistook your shopping cart for theirs😜.

One habit at a time, but we all have lapses. Best idea is to build those “lapses” into your schedule.

For instance, take one day every two weeks to eat all those things you think you’ve missed (except allergens like gluten) this won’t completely derail your health and alleviates any feelings of deprivation.

Thanks for another post idea and thanks for stopping by!

Loving the initiative and am actually writing a book on this exact topic - trying to make it work exactly like this. Explanations and background if you want it, but a cheat sheet at the end that's basically going to be similar to this - what little changes to implement into your life to make it better (near) effortlessly.

Not to give away too much, but also not too little, here's a couple snips for you (actual content from the upcoming book);

  • Eat slowly. Try putting the cutlery down every five bites and don't take another bite until you've finished swallowing the last one. If eating out, always be the slowest eater at the table.

  • Don't drink your calories or at the very least opt for lower calorie alternatives. *

  • Snack on foods that satisfy your cravings but don't make you binge.

  • Drink a tall glass of water prior to having a meal.

  • Only eat seated down and with no distractions. No watching TV and handling your phone while you eat.

*Most artificial sweeteners are regarded to as safe for consumption when consumed in moderate amounts. In non-diabetic adults, aspartame and acesulfame K were shown not to impact insulin sensitivity or secretion at a significant level, and also do not cause significant differences in body weight or waist circumference as opposed to a control group of people not consuming said artificial sweeteners [1].
Acesulfame K and aspartame are the two most common sweeteners used in zero/low calorie sodas (Coke zero, Pepsi max, and orhers).
[1] F. Bonnet et al.: Consumption of a Carbonated Beverage with High-Intensity Sweeteners Has No Effect on Insulin Sensitivity and Secretion in Nondiabetic Adults, The Journal of Nutrition, July 2018, doi: 10.1093/jn/nxy100

In case you're wondering, the book is scheduled to be published sometime before the 1st of October.

Wow! That’s exciting - where will your book be published? Do you have a title yet?

Soda is actually the first SNiP to be published soon and I see you have it in the list. I will respectfully disagree on the use of aspartame etc but will leave that explanation for the SNiP and we can debate it there.

Thanks for the list of possible topics! They will be stolen since you handed them right over 😉.

Looking forward to more info on your book! I’m already following you but do please drop a line on my blog or dm in discord with the specifics as my feed can be treacherous.

Likely through amazon - easiest and has the largest potential audience.
I do indeed:

"Do I really need another diet?
A psychological approach to your relationship with food"

Only stating the research on artificial sweeteners and that they're proven to be safe when consumed in moderate amounts. The book itself is research-based.

Not a problem ^^ Main idea is to help people. I'm only trying to put it into a format that's handy enough to take with you anywhere you go and easy to follow, while still providing all the necessary information. ^^

Sounds good! Will notify you when it's published! It pretty much only needs the inside imagery and the cover done :p

Change is hard, but I'm thinking about it.

GREAT idea!! and post!! thanks for sharing it on PYPT!

Finite niche you've chosen here sweets, look forward to see what you come out with :)

Interesting, let’s see how it goes, I am following. 😊
