Is Kale or Spinach Better At Protecting You From Cancer?

in #health7 years ago

The two most common most talked about dark green leafies, both are fantastic for you nutritionally, so fantastic in fact that comparing them in general health is almost irrelevant so how about in terms of antioxidants(?)!

This time I had to pull up a different study entirely which instead of covering just a few hundred foods it covers over 3000! Sadly it doesn't cover many leafy greens, so I couldn't compare these two to collard greens or swiss chard, but hey, it's something.

So which one IS better?

As you can see Kale has about 2x as much antioxidants as Spinach, and if you get some fancy red kale that may even be 4x as good!

But hey, they're both so great for you it's not a big deal to eat one or the other if you prefer one over the other, but no matter what with how nutritionally dense and generally amazing dark green leafies are for you you should probably get some more in :)

On a side note look how cool "red" kale looks~

To see all the foods and how they compare see the science once again, or wait for my next post on the subject.
Currently I've made two other posts like this, one for Tree nuts and one for Apples, so if you're curious, check'em out :)

The only image not from the science that I used, the Kale vs Spinach one was sourced from here
Opps I forgot the kale

Also, a big thanks to @full-measure for the request for one of these on (dark?) leafy greens, sorry I couldn't find any sources that included more variety, but it's rare they test these things. Swiss Chard & Collards are probably somewhere in the middle though based on their colors, genus, etc.

Rad!! Ya I guess leafy greens are all so good for you that there isn't as much testing.

The red kale just "looks" amazing, I feel like I got some sort of benefit by just looking at it.

I'm cooking pasta in a few and now I feel inspired to throw some frozen spinach into the sauce hehe.

(My instincts feel like frozen spinach loses something relative to fresh spinach .. not sure, not that it really matters .. I know most veggies don't really lose anything from freezing)

Spinach always is nice is pasta imo, just don't add too much! I always use it when I make lasagna, I'm always too lazy for regular spaghetti though.
More than how it's stored is where it's from and how you cook it, although fresh is usually better taste/quality wise at least :)

Ya it could just be the type of spinach they use in the store bought, 99cent "chopped spinach" package isn't up to snuff relative to most fresh spinach (rather than that it's frozen, per se)

Kale is a superfood we all need to eat more

tbh anything that grows on a bush/tree is pretty much a superfood

True, but the most sought after greens are not necessarily the best for us

I found this very informative to my own research into the nutrients and value to our bodies of both spinach and kale. I have a home freezedrier :) and have so far freezedried spinach, with kale being on my short list to do next. I will be posting pictures of the freezedried spinach later today on my next post :) With the freezedried spinach it can be turned into a powder for smoothies, soups, casseroles, and to have on hand when you can't find it in season at the market. That will be the same for Kale as well.
