Traditional Chinese medicine Diagnostics of organs
The colour and luster of the face chiefly depend on blood circulation, the changes of complexion may serve as a mirror to show whether the function of the heart is sound or not.
The tongue is the “window” of the heart. Normal colour of the tongue depends upon normal blood circulation. The heart has its “special orifice” in the tongue.
Major physiological functions of lung
- Governing (dominating) Qi and controlling respiration:
The lung is the place where gas exchange between the interior and exterior of the body takes place.
Abnormal: cough, asthma, respiratory disorder
The generation and flow of Qi in the whole body are related to the lung.
Abnormal: shortness of qi, feeble voice, lassitude, lack of energy
- Being in charge of dispersing and purifying-descending:
First, the waste gas from the metabolism of whole body is exhaled.
Second, the lung disperse the body fluid and the essence from the spleen onto the whole body and externally to the skin and hair.
purifying-descending function
First, the fresh air is inhaled.
Second, transmit the fresh air downward into the kidney which receives the air, transmit the body fluid and the essence downward to the lower parts of the body.
Third, eliminate the foreign body in the lung and respiratory tract in order to keep respiratory tract pure.
- Smoothing (regulating) water passage
The lung possess the action to regulate the circulation, distribution and excretion of body fluid.
The function is carried out through the dispersing and descending properties.
Through the dispersing property, the lung do:
Not only scatter the body fluid and the essence from the food and water onto upper part of the body to nourish them
but also eliminate parts of the waste or surplus water after utilisation out of the body by way of exhalation and sweating.
Through the descending property
It transmits body fluid constantly downward to the lower part of the body, and transmits waste fluid downward to the kidney and the urinary bladder where urine is produced and discharged.
The lung, in which blood vessels converge, assist the heart in circulating blood.
The skin is the constituent part of the lung system, the fine(body) hair is the adorned part of the lung. The body surface includes the skin, body hair and sweat pores. They protect the body against exogenous affections.
(lung disperses essence to the skin, and disperses defensive qi to strengthen the body resistance, regulate opening -closing of sweat pores.)
The lung have special orifice in the nose. Nasal discharge is the secretion related to the lung. The lung are responsible for sorrow (sadness) in emotion.
Major physiological functions
After birth, a person depends on the spleen-stomach to digest and absorb the foodstuff, converting them into the essence so as to nourish the body, thus maintaining its normal life activity. Because this part comes from the acquirement, it is called the The spleen is in charge of transforming the food and water into essential substances, transporting the essence to the viscera and tissues all over the body. Spleen transports essential substances upwardsIn addition, spleen has the action of supporting the organs at right place. Prolapse of uterus, rectum, diarrhoea, etc.
The spleen keeps the blood circulating inside the vessels and prevents it from extravasation the major mechanism for the spleen to control blood is actually the controlling action of Qi. Constituent part is the muscles transformation and transportation of nutrient to the limbs. The spleen system has its “special orifice(window)” in the mouth. And the adorned part is the lip. Saliva (slobber) is the fluid related to the spleen system. The spleen is responsible for thinking (worry) in emotion.
Liver function
five elements: wood
Close relation with six-fu organs: gall-bladder (exterior-interior relationship) ,Being in charge of smoothing and discharging and storing blood. ‘Smoothing and Discharging ’ means regulating. The liver has the function to smooth the Qi flow of the whole body and keep it free from obstruction. The discharging action of the liver also means the secretion and excretion of the bile.
The bile
comes from the liver, relying on normal function of the liver in discharging.
helps the spleen and stomach to digest and absorb.
Thirdly, maintaining normal circulation of Qi and blood. The liver has the capability to store blood and regulate the blood volume in circulation. The two functions of the liver (smoothing and discharging, and storing blood) are closely related to each other.
The tendon is the constituent of the liver system, the nails are the adorned part of the liver. The liver has its “special orifice(window)” in the eyes. The liver is responsible for anger in emotion. Tear is the fluid related to the liver
Kidney
Five elements: water , close relation with six-fu organs: urinary bladder (exterior-interior relationship )
- Storing vital essence, which is in charge of growth, development and reproduction.
- Dominating water metabolism
- Governing reception of the air
Vital essence:
extract or vital element which is the essential substance to constitute the body, The substantial basis for growth, Development and reproduction as well as maintenance of various functional activities of the body.
The congenital essence
It is the primordial matter to constitute the body, being the basis of life.
The congenital essence is stored in the kidney.
After birth it is constantly replenished with the acquired essence, becoming the essential matter for generation of offspring of man.
It is also called “the genetical essence.
The Qi transformed from the vital essence of the kidney is called the kidney-Qi, conventionally they are collectively known as the kidney-essence-Qi.
The flourishing of the kidney-essence-Qi affects the natural law of birth, growth, development, aging and death of human beings. After birth, through natural support and mutual nourishment of the congenital and the acquired essence , the kidney-essence-Qi becomes abundant and strong gradually.
TianGui
(sexual promoter something equal to gonad stimulating hormone and gonadotrophic hormone)
As constant flourishing and strengthening of the kidney-essence-Qi, at a certain period (about 14 for female and 16 for male). There comes a kind of substance known as TianGui, which promotes the sexual maturity and maintains reproductive function of human body.As a result, the sperm is generated for male; and the menarche comes for female, the sexual function gradually matures.
Afterward, the kidney-essence-Qi becomes more and more abundant and strong. That is the middle-aged period, which is marked as strong and firm bones and tendons, full and round muscles, exuberant genitality and health physique.Hereafter, the kidney-essence-Qi gets declined little by little, and following the generation of sexual promoter gets decreased and finally exhausted, the production ability is then lost. This is the geriatric period, which is manifested as withered look, hoar hair, odontoptosis and doddering.
The kidney presides over water metabolism of the whole body and regulates the balance of water metabolism in the whole body. The kidney possesses the action of accepting the air inhaled by the lung and regulating respiration.
- The kidney dominates the bone, and produces the marrow. Adorned part is hair.
- The kidney has its special orifices in the ear and the two Yin parts (anus and vagina).
- The kidney is responsible for feeling fear
- Saliva is the secretion related to the kidney.
The kidney has its “special orifices(window)” in the ear and the two Yin parts (anus and vagina). The kidney is responsible for feeling fear
