I tried Welako and these are my thoughts
Exploring Welako: A New Steemit Frontend 🚀
After being away from Steemit for a few days, I wanted to try out some new things upon my return.
A couple of weeks ago, @greece-lover sent a message under one of my posts, introducing the Welako platform to me. I hesitated a little because of what I'd heard about witnesses taking advantage of users' keys. However, after reading about his long history on Steemit and his participation as a witness, I felt I was dealing with a rather honest platform.
I do hope he responds to this post and actually reads my review. I also hope the @welako-team spots this blog as well.
I tried the website and, before I get into the details of what I think, I'll simply say it's an awesome frontend on Steemit.
I can see that it's both a general social platform and a blockchain, so we could call it a hybrid. I personally like the theme, the color choices, and the icons used in the app UI. There are more features on it than the standard Steemit frontend.
I'm used to SteemX, but trying this out, I actually wish I had tried it longer. Although SteemX is also amazing, I might just create two blogs—one for each frontend.
Sign-Up Process ✍️
You have two options for sign-up:
Use your email
Use both blockchain and email
Since I wanted to connect my Steemit blockchain account, I went with "Both". It was a smooth sign-up with no bugs on that page, and everything was pretty fast.
Display Name Setup
After connecting my Steemit account, it asks for a display name.
I have to wonder why it does not allow the display to be changeable. Since you can't change it, you have to give deep thought to it before you set up a display name. I was able to successfully set up my display name as "Abenalilly".
Push Notifications
After that page, another notification pops up suggesting you activate push notifications. Essentially, you get notified whenever someone comments on your posts, starts following you, or mentions you. I found this to be an absolutely wonderful feature, making Welako feel like real social media where you don't have to refresh your feed every five minutes to see whether somebody commented on your post.
Customizable Features 🎛️
The page welcomed me back by saying "Welcome back, abenalillyflower!"
Welako has lots of functions, but they decided to start users off with the most basic ones to avoid confusion, which is very thoughtful. If you want to explore other functions, you can simply activate other modules under Settings. I clicked on "Adjust menu now".
After checking the customize menu, it appears there are several choices. With only Feed and Inbox, you will see Welako purely as social media. However, there are other options offered under the modules and marketplace sections, including:
WelSnap (photos)
WelYu (videos)
WelBnB (holiday apartments, perhaps?)
A whole marketplace where you can sell stuff
These can be easily turned on or off, making Welako look very much like a hybrid platform trying to implement regular social media functions onto the blockchain. Very cool, if you ask me.
Profile Overview 👤
I proceeded to check my profile. There are several tabs. My profile on Welako shows my display name and my Steemit handle, but since I haven't made any posts via Welako so far, it shows 0 posts and comments.
Once I switched to the Blockchain tab, everything got synced up properly. All my real stats from Steemit were automatically pulled up here:
156.158 SP
5 followers
24 following
171 posts
There is also the possibility to "Calculate statistics". After scrolling down, I could see my posts pulled up, including my recent post about poultry farming and my post on Steem Hop strategy. Everything works just as well as standard Steemit, showing payouts and upvotes too.
Creating Posts ✏️
When creating a new post, there's an option called "Both". It is described as the maximum security mode where your post is saved on Welako (where it can be deleted) but is simultaneously permanently saved on the Steem blockchain. It has a nice-looking editor offering additional services, including AI formatting and templates. That will most likely be my favorite feature of all.
Final Thoughts 💭
I would like to say that I am very grateful to @greece-lover for leaving a comment on my blog. While I was initially concerned about safety, Welako turned out to be quite a beautiful and fluid frontend with many additional functions that standard Steemit does not offer. The possibility to choose and change the menu is just great.
Of course, I am still very much in love with SteemX, but Welako is also worth checking out. I used Formatting tool by the way and it's awesome.
What are your opinions on Welako if you've already used it? I really wish for feedback because it's all new to me.
