I experimented with salt on Watermelon
I usually go out in the evenings for a stroll and on my way back, I buy some fruits. I got some watermelons but before I ate it, I came across a tweet by someone anonymous who said he sprinkles a little bit of salt on watermelon before eating and it makes it taste better.
I really didn't want to waste a good melon but the salt shaker was right there and I have a knack for experimenting. I grabbed the salt shaker, lightly shook my hand while sprinkling just a little bit of salt, because I've never done it before so it was so strange to me. If not for the fact that it was not my own money I used to buy the melon, I don't think I'll make the attempt.
The sweetness of the watermelon changed and intensified when I added the salt. Not that it became salty, but it kept the watermelon from being overly watery. I don't think it's something magical, but when eating watermelon as raw as we buy them, the seeds can also affect the enjoyment of the fruit because I have to be spitting them out one by one, it's really not the best part of eating a watermelon.
I might eventually just buy a whole pineapple and try making my own drink out of it with some form of alcohol. There's really not much else to say about this experience, my knife was not that sharp, I couldn't find the really sharp one.
But if you're thinking of trying it, I would recommend it. Yes it does change the flavour from sweet like watermelon to something else. Is it a better flavour? I thought of it as such but maybe some people might agree with me that there is enough flavour on the fruit without adding salt. But if I have to eat watermelons again, I'll probably reach for the salt shaker again because my I actually liked it.
But how much salt you put is as important as any cooking, too much salt going onto the watermelon could definitely take away all of the flavour from the fruit. The last bite that I took had a bit more salt at that spot and I couldn't eat that
