One day, his wife said in passing, penguins most likely smelled very bad. The husband raised his head to look at her and asked why she thought that.

She told him it was because they looked dirty that's why she thought that. There was something about the way penguins stand which, in her eyes, was able to suggest that a bad smell must be coming from them.

How she could think that I'll never know.

This simple comment ended up starting a real long debate between the couple on whether or not penguins are dirty animals. The simple debate quickly turned into a hot argument that lasted over twenty minutes. Clearly it was not about penguins, these guys had issues they were not talking about.

He seemed to take it personally, taking the matter more seriously than what it actually is. His argument was that they are perfectly clean animals because they lived in cold places and spent a lot of time in the water, but she would not accept that. She kept telling him that there was some dirtiness about how they looked. The more she kept at it, the angrier he became. It stopped being about penguins and became about pride. She could say whatever she wanted and he would stand his ground. Penguins were perfectly healthy and beautiful birds and guess what, they're minding their business in the cold.

Somewhere along the line, she pointed out that he was getting too worked up about the fact that he had never even seen one in real life.

That was the last straw for him. After hearing that, he became even more angry, taking the whole argument to another level. It was funny how the two of them were fighting over something that was totally useless, but it is typical of married couples, of course. It seems only after years of living together can such things happen.

It took him some time to calm down and start thinking of penguins again. In a sheer act of defiance, he even started looking into the issue, trying to prove how clean they were, looking at forum discussions, videos on YouTube, every science data to prove her wrong. It was amazing how marriage could push a person to such lengths. He actually read books about penguins' hygiene too.
