The Ga kenkey
The Ga Kenkey as a food is like off the charts when you come to Ghana. I'm more of a fante kenkey lover but I will never turn down Ga kenkey with red pepper sauce and fish or sausage.
Ga Kenkey Meal is very unique. They start the whole thing with maize which we really do have plenty of here in Ghana. The maize is processed into a dough, then that dough is set aside so it can ferment. This entire process creates a unique sour taste to it. The fermenting process takes a bit of time though. The Ga Kenkey Meal is a traditional meal of the Ga people, many people have said that it gives the feeling of a meal from home. I am not a Ga I'm an Ashanti so I can't really say that I relate or understand but I see what a Ga person would say that.
The food is wrapped up, which enhances the experience by a lot. The chewy maize meal is wrapped up in and also steamed with corn husks. This keeps it warm and makes it very easy to slice and consume. It also pairs very well with pepper, shito, fish, or koobi.
Ga Kenkey is different because of the people. Most of the food being sold is home made. What makes the meal appreciated is because it is something that kind of represents Ghana. If you don't know too much about us you would think we're good for just gold and cocoa but it's only when you live in the country that you understand some things like this that's just part of the culture.
The food is not only uniquely made in Ghana, it is made all over Africa.
