Guess what I had for launch
This is the snack of all snacks in deep modern Ghanaian culture. If you don't have any money to buy the expensive boxed and canned snacks like the Pringles and the foreign imported biscuits and cookies, this is the thing you go for.
Fresh, mashed kenkey, with a mix of milk, sugar and to add the plant based protein, groundnuts or peanuts.
They made the raw thing using fermented corn dough. I like to eat the kenkey raw without sugar but sometimes I want the good taste so I get the whole mix. The ingredients themselves are not expensive so the final product isn't as well. I got the kenkey for GH 6 cedis and the groundnuts for GH 2 cedis. So GH 8 cedis in total which if you convert to dollars is literally less than 1 dollar. It's about 75 cents for a heavy snack.
If you were earning in dollars living in some of the African countries, you'd be living life on easy mode.
I prefer it cold so I always ask for the one in the fridge and besides all are kept in the fridge but you could get the hot one. It depends entirely on your preference.
You drink it straight from the plastic bottle just like you would drink Coca-Cola. Some make this at home and drink it from a bowl with a spoon.
The combo of the mashed kenkey and the groundnuts is by no means an accident, the crunch feeling you get from the nuts and the sweet taste of the kenkey will make you really enjoy the entire thing.
Kenkey had this well known sour sweetness too. It's heavy so it'll fill you up and sustain that for a really long time. And when it's cold from the fridge you're not only getting the filling but you're getting the cooling. It can be hot this time of the year in Accra. You can't really predict when the rains come, the weather pattern is a total mess these days but when it's hot, this is better than coca cola because it's healthier and heavier. Especially best for people that do really energy demanding jobs under the heat of the sun.
This is not a smoothie or a specially made health drink with a nice label. As you can see from the bottle there's really no label. But this food unlike the snacks that are made in factory, will never go out of style.
