Assalam-O-Alikum Friends,

Sometimes the journey is not very long, just a distance of two-four kilometers and the whole day is filled with peace. Our afternoon today was also similar. I, my husband and our son – all three of us thought that why not get out of the hustle and bustle of everyday life and sit somewhere comfortably and eat something nice. When I left home, only one place was wandering in my mind - Shri Jala Chula Sev-Usal, an identity of Vadodara, which has been famous for its taste for years.

As soon as we reached the place, we felt a sense of belonging. The simple seating area set up outside on the roadside, the colorful flowered clothes on the tables, and the sweet smell of rice rising in the air – all together were creating a different atmosphere. Looking at the crowd, it was clear that how many people were captivated by the taste of this place. Some families with kids, some college friends, some coming for a quick lunch—each table had its own little world.

We were sitting at a table when my eyes fell on the walls. The walls throughout the dhaba-like restaurant were decorated with highlights of the city of Vadodara photographs of signature dishes, colorful graphics and the words “I Love Vadodara” written in capital letters. It felt as if we were not sitting somewhere far away, but in the heart of our own city, where every corner was familiar and familiar.

Within a short while our sev-usal arrived. When the rice cooked on the stove was kept in a steel bowl, its aroma seemed to reach straight to the heart. Fresh green onions and lightly toasted bread were on the plate along with it. My husband took the first bite and smiled without saying anything—and smile is the only language that conveys the true meaning of taste.

I tasted it too—and honestly, the first bite showed why this place is so popular. The balance of spices in it is such that it is neither too spicy nor bland. The crispy sev added on top adds to the fun of eating. Each bite is packed with distinct flavors the spices on one side the slight smoke of the chula on the other, along with the freshness of the green onions all together creating a taste that lasts a long time.

Our son was trying to eat the loaf by picking it up with his little fingers, and we involuntarily laughed after seeing him. It's moments like these that make eating out no matter how simple and special. It is not the grandeur of a restaurant, but the simplicity of those moments that wins the heart.

While eating sev usal, I was also looking at the crowd sitting around. Someone was talking loudly and laughing, someone was eating peacefully someone was preparing to order another plate. There was a commotion in this entire atmosphere, but there was a calmness in that commotion too. As if everyone has come here not just to enjoy the taste but also to take some respite from everyday life.

As good as the taste of sev-usal was it also seemed light. There was very little oiliness, spices do not weigh down the mind. So after dinner we had tea—in a big steel glass. The hot steam of tea and the slight spice was giving complete relief as soon as it entered the throat. Tea at a dhaba has its own pleasure, and sitting there and drinking it has its own feeling.

When we got up after finishing our meal we saw that people were still standing in line outside. Many people were waiting for their turn—and the sight itself showed how deep the impact of taste is. New places may open, new tastes may emerge, but some old places always remain in the hearts due to their authenticity and tradition.

This short journey to eat food was not a long journey, but still it felt as if the day had become a little more beautiful from somewhere. Sometimes it's not the big trips, but the small outings, the light moments spent with family, and simple but delicious food—these are the real joys of travel.

While returning home, this thought was coming to my mind again and again that every city has some special places which become a part of the soul of that city. And for me this place in Vadodara is one of those special places.

If you ever come here, do take out time and visit once. The aroma of food cooking on the stove, and even more so, the atmosphere here, both will give you a memory that will stay with you for a long time.
