There is a 26,000 cycle of how our Solar System wobbles up and down the galactic plane. Every 13,000 years, we have an extinction event, either from space or due to Earth changes.
My guess is, that Atlantis being lost was during one of these 13,000 year events.
The information I have is complex, but in this context I can say that all of the repeating cycles in creation have an original cause and there has never been proper balance. It is possible to trace back the patterns we have in humanity now to their causal level and trace how these can also push whole societies and planets out of balance to the point of self destruction. Is it really difficult to accept that past civilisations have rushed ahead with technology without balancing their hearts first - with cataclysmic results?
