Only In Recent Memory was Germany Once a Divided Nation.

Less than 30 years ago Germany was divided into East and West Berlin by the infamous Berlin wall. The Berlin wall project officially called Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart began its construction in 1961 and was 125 miles long. Its purpose was to prevent the people of communist East Berlin from defecting to the west and limit social interaction between the two sides. Previously 3.5 million East Berliners had defected to West Berlin before the wall’s construction. Eventually in the summer of 1990 civil unrest eventually lead to the demise of the East West Berlin blockade and ultimately the deconstruction of the Berlin Wall itself. In October 3, 1990 the German reunification officially took place and Germany again was made whole.
