Introduction

A man once won ₦1 billion from a bet. Everyone celebrated him. He became the center of attention. But within a few weeks, everything was gone.

How?

He couldn’t retain his success. This made me reflect deeply on life. Is it harder to become successful… or to remain successful?

1. Which Is More Challenging: Achieving Success or Retaining It?

In my opinion, retaining success is more challenging.

As someone who works in a business environment, my boss always says, “It’s easy to start a business, but not everyone can run it.” At first, I didn’t understand what she meant. But with time, reality explained it better than words. When people think about starting a business, they focus on:

  • Raising capital
  • Renting a shop
  • Stocking products
  • Selling

That’s the simple mindset. But what about:

  • Business drawdowns?
  • Days with zero sales?
  • Products expiring?
  • Customers owing you?
  • Economic instability?

Many businesses close not because they couldn’t start, but because they couldn’t sustain.

The same applies to success. Everyone wants to become a millionaire. But few people develop the discipline, wisdom, and emotional maturity required to remain one. That man who won ₦1 billion didn’t fail to achieve success he failed to manage it.

Success without control, structure, and growth mindset disappears faster than it came.

2. What Is More Significant: Enjoying Passion or Chasing Success?

At first, I would have said chasing success because that’s what the world glorifies.

Everyone wants to “blow.”
Everyone wants money.
Some people even go to extreme lengths just to get rich quickly.

But when I think deeply, I choose passion.

If I chase money alone, I may:

  • Burn out
  • Lose myself
  • Feel empty even after achieving it

But if I pursue my passion:

  • I enjoy the process
  • I grow naturally
  • I won’t feel exhausted
  • Money will eventually come as a reward

Passion gives peace. Success gives applause.

I would rather have peace first.

3. What Is Achievement to Me?

Achievement is not private jets or millions in the bank.

To me, achievement means:

  • Having my daily bread
  • Having a place to sleep
  • Clothes to wear
  • Seeing my loved ones alive and well
  • Feeling fulfilled
  • Knowing I served my Creator

That is fulfillment. That is success. True achievement is not measured by how much money we have, but by how much contentment we feel inside.

Conclusion

Achieving success may look glamorous, but retaining it requires discipline. Chasing money may bring wealth, but pursuing passion brings joy. And achievement? It is living a life where your needs are met, your heart is at peace, and your purpose is fulfilled. Sometimes, the greatest success is not in gaining everything but in not losing yourself.
