Meaning of group

Group is a collection of people who have something in common, example interests, beliefs and aims. A group can also be referred to as any set of persons who interact with one another.

Characteristics of a Group

From the description of a group, the following characteristics are noted:

  1. Shared Emotions and Feelings: The group members shared the same feelings and emotions. This feelings can also be referred to as sentiments.

  2. Interaction: Members of a group believes in a set of ideals or principles which they frequently come together to share. Interaction builds an understanding and a cordial relationship among the members.

  3. Common Goals: Members of a group believe in a common set of goals and they work together towards achieving them.

  4. Communication: Group members may have a special means or a definable way by which they communicate with one another. Communication promotes unity and mutual understanding.

  5. Set of Rules: Members of a group usually have set of rules and regulations which detect how they should relate or behaved, what they should do or not to do.

Group Behaviour

Good behaviour is described as activities, conduct or performances of a collection of people who share the same interests, beliefs or aims. Group behavior can also be referred to as all the forms of traits such as communication, dressing, values, beliefs by which a certain group could be identified.

Types of Group Behaviour

Group behaviour could be classified into two; these are:

  1. Positive/Constructive Group Behaviour: These are group behaviours that are constructive. In other words, they are useful and intended to help or improve some situations. Positive group behaviours are meant to influence the society positively. Examples of positive group behaviour are: a peaceful demonstration by labour unions to improve welfare of their colleagues, an expressive crowd like spectators of fans cheering their team to victory at a football match, a group of students acting patriotically by cleaning their school compound after closing hours without being instructed to do so by their teachers. These are positive group behaviours or actions.

Examples of destructive or negative group behaviour include the action of a group of students engage in a street fight which can lead to their suspension or expulsion from school, protest against government policies by some members of the public resulting in looting and destruction of life and property.
