Pamonha

Hi Steemians! So this post is about pamonha, a traditional food that is found in Brazil made from corn. Corn is a popular food in Brazil and used in various dishes, both sweet and savoury and is very versatile. When I tried pamonha at a street market, I thought it was very tasty and I want to try it again and try the different varieties that exist.

Thanks for reading this post and thanks to the @steemfoods

So pamonha can be found in Brazil and it's origin is from the natives who have prepared this dish for thousands of years (I believe). It also exists in other countries, such as Mexico and in Central America (called tamale) where the indigenous people created it before the Aztecs and the Mayans. In Brazil, the Tupi-Guarani word “pa’muna” means sticky or “apa-mimoia” meaning wrapped and cooked. Source

My wife and I bought pamonha from a street stall/seller that sold other dishes made from corn

Pamonha is made from grated corn made into a paste and wrapped in corn husks or leaves and cooked in boiling water. Pamonhas can be savoury or sweet. Savoury ones are prepared plain with meat and cheese and sweet ones include coconut milk or pulp. At the stall where we bought our pamonhas, there was a choice of sweet or savoury - with or without cheese, and pork loin pamonha. Pamonhas can be eaten any time of year but they can be difficult to find as they are not sold everywhere. They are associated with Festa Junina, the annual Brazilian festival which is celebrated in June, which marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of Brazilian winter.

Pamonha is very tasty, this one we had was sweet with cheese

Does this dish exist in your country and where and when does it originate from? Have you tried it before and what did you think of it? Hope you enjoyed this post and see you next time. 🇧🇷 😊
