Crows: Smart Birds, But Very Noisy!

in R2cornell2 years ago

We have quite a few crows in the area.

The seem to be divided into specific family groups, and there is a lot of noise when one family intrudes on another family's territory.

One usually keeps lookout, in the top of our tallest cedar tree.

The lookout!

This one seemed to be pecking at something in the tree. It's too early and cold for there to be many insects, so what is it eating?

Watched for a while, and it seems like there are still some old seed pods up there, from last autumn.

Or maybe it is eating the tiny new shoots that are coming out for spring?

They are very intelligent birds, and they often show up when my husband and I go out to the back yard with our afternoon coffees.

They used to be very shy, but after 4-5 years they have grown quite comfortable, and will often approach to within 15 feet or so if we toss them some old bread.

Thanks for having a look at my post! All photos are my own, usually taken in nature on or around our property.
