SLCS31W6 - My Taste My Culture; Unity through food.
Hello friends!
Before we begin, I want to sincerely appreciate the Steemit team once again for this amazing opportunity. Thank you for creating a platform where culture, creativity, diversity, and human connection can be expressed beautifully through food.
Welcome to Week 6 and the final week of this exciting journey: “My Taste, My Culture” (Expressing Culture Through Taste).
🎉 What is this week about? — Unity Through Food.
Over the past weeks, we explored heritage, identity, celebration, street food, family tradition, and everyday lifestyles through meals.
This week, we unite cultures through food…
The meals that connect people, cultures, traditions, and histories across different parts of the world.
Food is one of the strongest symbols of global connection because many meals:
- Exist in different cultures with unique variations
- Travel from one country to another
- Blend traditions and cooking styles
- Unite people despite language or geographical differences
This week focuses on:
- Shared humanity
- Cultural exchange
- Unity in diversity
- Global food connections
🍛 My Unity Food
For this week, I present a beloved dish shared across several African cultures and beyond:
👉 Moi Moi (Steamed Bean Pudding)
Moi Moi is a steamed bean pudding made from blended beans, peppers, onions, oil, and spices. Though popularly associated with Nigeria, similar bean-based dishes exist across many African cultures with slight differences in preparation and ingredients.
It is enjoyed in different ways with:
- Rice
- Pap (Akamu)
- Custard
- Bread
- Salads
Cultural Connections of Moi Moi
Moi Moi connects several cultures because bean-based steamed meals are common across West Africa and other regions.
Nigerian Culture –We eat Moi Moi during celebrations, family gatherings, and everyday meals.
Ghanaian Culture – Similar bean dishes and steamed preparations exist within Ghanaian cuisine using related ingredients that are related and cooking traditions.
Brazilian/African Diaspora Influence – There are similar bean-based dishes that are seen in Afro-Brazilian cuisine and this is largely due to food migration and movement of African traditions.
Shared Ingredients & Traditions
These cultures commonly share:
- Beans
- Pepper
- Onions
- Palm oil or vegetable oil
- Local spices
They also share traditions such as:
- Cooking for large gatherings
- Family-style eating
- Community celebrations
- Preserving traditional cooking methods
👉 This is not just food—it is a symbol of connection, migration, shared roots, and unity across cultures.

🎯 Final Thoughts
Food has always traveled beyond borders. Recipes migrate, cultures interact, and traditions blend beautifully across generations and continents. Sometimes, the same meal exists in different places with different names, yet the emotions behind them remain the same.
This week is about celebrating those beautiful connections through food—showing how meals can unite humanity despite our differences.
I can’t wait to discover the amazing dishes and cultural connections you will all share.
