Researchers show Facebook’s ad tools can target a single user - TechCrunch

“The main conclusions derived from our experiment are the following: (i) nanotargeting a user on FB is highly likely if an attacker can infer 18+ interests from the targeted user; (ii) nanotargeting is extremely cheap, and (iii) based on our experiments, 2/3 of the nanotargeted ads are expected to be delivered to the targeted user in less than 7 effective campaign hours,” they add in a summary of the results.

In another section of the paper discussing countermeasures to prevent nanotargeting, the researchers argue that Facebook’s claimed limits on audience size “have been proven to be completely ineffective” — and assert that the tech giant’s limit of 20 is “not currently being applied”.

With the 4 rarest interests or 18 random interests, the researchers claim they can target an individual user with better than 90% confidence.

According to the paper, this sort of nanotargeting puts individuals at risk of "psychological persuasion, user manipulation, or blackmailing". Using a real-world example from 2017, when Jeremy Corbyn was targeted along with some journalists and other influencers, the article also reveals that this sort of manipulation can have sweeping impacts.

The article doesn't discuss this, but it also occurs to me that multiple ad campaigns could probably be used by an advertiser to create interest profiles of the FB users who react to the sponsored posts, and these profiles could then be utilized for subsequent nanotargeting.

Facebook is showing more ad than videos and It's really very annoying. We can't stop the ad totally but we can reduce the ad with a setting. Here is the setting, you can check this.

On Facebook, each person has some set of general parameters (age, region, various interests) that can be targeted for ads. The paper basically just says "there exists a set of parameters such that the total number of people in the targeted group is 1."

I think, advertisers can't get your identity. A bad actor would already have to know a lot about you to take advantage of this.

The paper basically just says "there exists a set of parameters such that the total number of people in the targeted group is 1."

This is how I understood it, too. Basically, we're leaving a fingerprint by revealing our interests. The more we "Like" or react to, or even view, the stronger the fingerprint. And FB is giving its advertisers the ability to target and identify us based on that fingerprint.

Nothing to stop nanotargeting
One way to prevent one-to-one targeting would be if Facebook were to put a robust a limit on the minimum audience size.

This is something very dangerous. I myself, no longer make posts on facebook more than 3 years, do not give a like sign on anyone's post, but ads still appear in the feed. Is this method effective, to reduce facebook ads? hopefully so.

I have also reduced my Facebook usage and almost eliminated Twitter usage in recent months. They used to be sources of information, but now - to me - they feel more like indoctrination centers.

Another thing I did is to "unlike" most of the pages I had followed so that my account would be less valuable to Facebook.

I understand .. A few months ago I created a facebook because in reality I am not a lover of social networks like FB and Twitter. I still think that lasting 1 or 2 hours attached to facebook or Twitter is 2 hours valuable that I am losing of my life.

I joined facebook with the intention of interacting with the steemit community but my facebook is plagued with advertisements about cryptocurrencies, some of which are scams.

FB has an algorithm that knows specifically what our topic of interest is with the intention of leaving you there for hours and hours.

Except maybe for group suggestions - which are 95% terrible - I don't pay attention to ads since I have an ad blocker. And when an ad does come up, I hide it.

Ain't got no time to waste on mostly useless products

I also block ads and hide the ones that appear in my timeline. However, I still think it's good to be aware of the capabilities that advertisers and propagandists bring to bear when promoting their products or narratives.

I know, it's scary. I troll #newspeakliberal groups... and THESE are the groups that are suggested. All the more content to hide

When I search something on google, then I watch some ad while using Facebook related with the search history. I think Facebook is observing our daily online activities and targeting us to show the ad. Thanks for this information.

The thing about the ads is understood since with that some expenses are paid, but sometimes certain companies abuse the power they have and saturate people with the ad. in my case I do not see some ads.

I think that Mark Zuckerberg will have to rethink this social network, the profits he has are very appreciable, and now Donald Trump wants to compete with him, I do not think he will stay still, he will have to do something.

It may be interesting to see what happens with Trump's initiative. I'm skeptical, though. It's hard to convince large numbers of people to change long-established habits.

Some times, i thought, i don’t use fb. But i can't. They use our personal news, opinions etc... Actually i don’t like much fb

Thanks for reminding us of certain details. Greetings.
