Cabbage Farming and Production in Nepal
Cabbage is one of the most popular leafy vegetables grown in Nepal. It is widely cultivated in both the Terai and hilly regions because it can grow in different climates. In Nepal, cabbage is usually planted during the winter season. Farmers generally sow seeds from September to November, and it is harvested from December to March. In some cooler high-hill areas, it can also be grown during the summer season.
Cabbage grows best in cool weather with temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. It requires fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Regular watering and proper sunlight are also necessary for healthy growth. Farmers often use compost and natural fertilizers to improve production.
In Nepal, cabbage is one of the major vegetable crops. It occupies a significant portion of vegetable farming land, contributing around 10–12% of total vegetable production in the country. Many farmers grow cabbage for both home consumption and market sale, making it an important source of income.
Cabbage has a mild, slightly sweet taste when cooked and a crunchy texture when eaten raw. It is commonly used in curries, pickles, salads, and soups. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals, making it a healthy and nutritious vegetable for Nepalese families.
