New CRISPR version protects against viruses without cutting DNA/Nueva versión CRISPR protege contra virus sin cortar el ADN

Once again today we are talking about the CRISPR genetic editing tool, a few days ago we commented on this blog how the experts used this tool to be able to do epigenetic editing, that is, instead of deleting genes, intervene at will in the activation/deactivation of our genes.

These CRISPRs are normally associated with a protein called Cas9, which is responsible for cutting the DNA in the place specified by the RNA associated with them, in recent times, other different Cas proteins have been discovered that convert this complex not only into genetic scissors but in a whole swiss army knife.

But despite all these proteins, although with more precision, they continue to cause cuts in the DNA, something that in the medium/long term nobody knows how it can be, but now a study published last week by Dr. Jennifer Doudna of the University of California Berkeley, awarded a Nobel Prize for its discoveries on the subject, can change things.

In this case it is the Cas12c protein, a protein that until now had a bad reputation because it was the only one unable to cut DNA but, in bacterial cells, this protein is capable of "grabbing onto viruses" rendering them useless and giving immunity to cells without interfering with their functions and without destroying DNA.

During a test, the team delivered phages (viruses that infect bacteria) into bacterial cells with the appropriate Cas12 protein and guide RNA or not, Cas12c shrank viral plaques a thousandfold, regardless of which DNA strand it was concentrated on the enzyme, proving to be an effective DNA-targeting system that provides antiviral immunity without the need to destroy DNA.

In addition, according to the experts, this does not end here because there are still more varieties of CRISPR to be discovered to continue revolutionizing medicine, it could be used, for example, to combat infectious diseases that are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics with the health risk that this entails.

Hello @mauromar, this is quite curious in the sense that it promises to uproot the virus from the genetic material "without altering the genetic material", I imagine that these tests have been done with animals, the real promising results will be those obtained from trials with humans, and this could open up hope in studies for the cure of HIV.

Great topic.

CrisprCas12c, uh. Suena más cool que CrisprCas9, at least in English.

Veremos donde nos lleva todo esto...

Hello @mauromar
Genetic engineering topics are among the ones I like the most. I feel that medical science is more inclined to intervene everything microscopic than anything else, and these advances and discoveries are always of much impact.
What you are talking about can provide a great advantage in the fight against infections, which in itself is of great importance.
