Alpena - the Oldest Ship on the Lakes - Shipspotting

I have to love this little beauty of a laker. Alpena is only 520 feet in length, which is almost half the length of the largest lakers. This ship is a cement hauler and is operated by Inland Lakes Management.

Alpena began her life as the Leon Fraser in 1942 and was renamed in 1991. She is an unusual ship in that she still runs on steam rather than diesel.

Today, Alpena was on her way from Alpena to Detroit (both in Michigan). It was good to see her after the winter hiatus.

Here, she is coming through Port Huron.

Almost two hours later, she went through Marine City.
Super Ships on YouTube captured her voyage including her beautiful steam horn.

Alpena continued through Algonac, Michigan, then finally arrived in Detroit almost three hours after Algonac.

Read more about Alpena from Boatnerd and Duluth Shipping News (with lots more pictures on both sites!)

And a couple more videos featuring this old gal... arriving in Duluth, Minnesota.

The sharing of the pictures/cameras is encouraged for the education and enjoyment of all. Please take a look at these cameras on YouTube.

Note: Boatnerd also hosts shipping news, huge amounts of data about almost any "laker" and even many of the "saltie" visitors - and even a book called "Know Your Ships". I would encourage supporting his great work, especially as he has plans to add more cameras in 2021.

If you want to be tagged in future shipspotting posts, please let me know and I'll add you to this list.
