COLLAGE TUTORIAL / TUTORIAL DE COLLAGE Parte 1 (SPA / ENG)

in WORLD OF XPILARlast year (edited)

The word Collage comes from the French "coller" which means to glue.

It was coined by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque at the beginning of the 20th century. It is said that it was Picasso who invented collage in 1912 with the work Still Life with a Grille Chair.

It is considered a collage because he incorporated oilcloth in the form of a grid into the work.

…............................................................................................................
Nowadays editing programs are used to make digital collages. I prefer to make them analogically, i.e. by cutting and pasting materials. All the works shown in the tutorial were made in an analogue way.

…...........................................................................................................

The technique to make collages is very simple, we only need a few materials that we surely have at home such as magazines, newspapers, scissors and glue.

We can always buy the materials we need at the stationery store, but reusing and recycling what we have at home and turning it into a small work of art is very satisfying.

…...........................................................................................................

To make a collage I am going to give you some ideas that can help you.

  • Choose a support that is harder than paper. It can be cardboard, a hard notebook, cardboard, wood, cork, etc. On this support we will make our collage.
  • The cutting board is a space where we can work safely when using the cutter. The cutter gives more precision to the cut, although I prefer to use a pair of scissors for smaller cuts.

…...........................................................................................................

The background on which we will do the work, it is preferable that it is of a neutral and plain colour, so that the cut-outs that we glue will stand out better.

A page of newspaper can also be used as a background. In the collage I made a few days ago I used a fairly neutral background, a photograph from an abstract art catalogue. In the link you can see the process.

…................................................................................................

  • We can use materials of different textures to give volume to our collage. Cardboard, tissue paper, curled paper, thread, string...

20221203_160622.jpg

We can also use watercolours or paints to paint some parts of the collage.

The cut-outs can be found in magazines, newspapers, books, advertising leaflets, etc. We can also look for images on the internet. Here you have a link to download free images for Collage

Another possibility is to use photos taken by ourselves, so we can give a more personal touch to the collage.

This is my notebook of imaginary houses. I used photographs I took at the city where I live of doors and windows. It is a little notebook where I make up little houses.

Any size can be used to make a collage, even a small notebook.-

…..........................................................................................................
You can use stamps and stamps to put letters in the collage or cut out letters from newspapers and magazines.

…......................................................................................................

  • In collage there are many possibilities, but to get started we can base ourselves on the work of other artists who will give us many ideas. Or choose a theme... for example: travel. It can be easier if you choose a theme, so that the search for cut-outs is more concrete.

For example, in these two collages I looked for cut-outs related to the theme "Travel". Maps, exotic animals, travellers, stamps from different countries...

O arrancarla simplemente. A mí me gusta introducir papel rasgado el el collage.
…............................................................................................................

  • When we have chosen the images, we place them on the support before gluing them, so we get an idea of the composition. If we make a mistake and we don't like any of the images, we can always paste another one on top.

Or simply tear it off. I like to introduce torn paper in the collage.

    ….....................................................................................
  • With just one or two images we can create a very simple collage. “Less is more”.

…......................................................................................................

In relation to the subject of making collages with few images, in one of the workshops I attended, the teacher proposed a creativity exercise.

With only two images to create a collage. The result was this.

.....................................................................................................

In summary, with a few well combined elements and imagination, spectacular results can be achieved.

The tutorial is very well done, I like that you started with introduction because not many people know what is it and if someone decides to explore it can find a huge variety of possibilities, depending of course, on the creativity and fantasy of users.

You made me curious I will see if I also can do something :)

Dear @steemcurator01, would you please visit this post to give some visibility. @silviadiez is one of our Judges of WOX Art contest and this is a tutorial for upcoming contests that Silvia specially prepared for that.
Thank you,

Thank you very much @stef1 for your support.

Everything is great, but not a single image opens for me. Updating the F5 page does not solve the problem. Did this happen to me alone?

PS. Hooray, everything worked, I'm sorry. It will be useful for me to study this material. I've never had to do collages. Thanks.

I think then both you and me should study that and could prepare something just dedicated to Christmas.

Why not, wee can try and see what happens :-))

Hi @bambuka, yes for a while you couldn't see the images on Steemit. I hope the tutorial inspires you to make some collages, it's a lot of fun.
