My wife and I decided we wanted to visit Itu in the state of São Paulo, Brazil for a day out and to visit our friend who lives there. It's not very far away from the city where we live, in Sorocaba. Itu is an old, historical city but it's known as the place of "big things".
Minha esposa e eu decidimos que queríamos visitar Itu, no estado de São Paulo, Brasil, para um dia e visitar nosso amigo que mora lá. Não fica muito longe da cidade onde moramos, em Sorocaba. Itu é uma cidade antiga e histórica, mas conhecida como o lugar das "grandes coisas".

This idea comes from a comedian called Simplicio who was born here who said: "In Itu, everything is bigger". So this led to the city becoming the "capital of large things". In the centre of the city, you have an oversized set of traffic lights and 4 metre tall public phone, amongst other things. In the shops you can buy oversized and larger than life gifts and souvenirs.
Esta ideia vem de um comediante chamado Simplício que nasceu aqui que disse: "Em Itu, tudo é maior". Então, isso levou a cidade a se tornar a "capital das grandes coisas". No centro da cidade, você tem um semáforo superdimensionado e um telefone público de 4 metros de altura, entre outras coisas. Nas lojas você pode comprar presentes e lembranças grandes e maiores que a vida.

We visited a few churches in the city. The first church near the Municipal Market is called the church of Saint Rita, inaugurated in 1728. The main church in the centre of the city in the Matriz Square is called Our Lady of Candelaria which is built on the site of the first chapel built in the city, constructed in 1610. It has a beautiful painted wooden ceiling. After this, we visited Church Bom Jesus which is another striking building with more than one altar. Then after this, we were able to visit the Church, Convent and Seminary of Our Lady of Carmo, which was closed last time we visited Itu, which is Baroque and colonial style built in the 18th century which also has a beautiful painted wooden ceiling. Visitamos algumas igrejas da cidade. A primeira igreja próxima ao Mercado Municipal chama-se Igreja de Santa Rita, inaugurada em 1728. A igreja matriz do centro da cidade na Praça da Matriz chama-se Nossa Senhora da Candelária que é construída no local da primeira capela construída em a cidade, construída em 1610. Tem um belo teto de madeira pintada. Depois disso, visitamos a Igreja Bom Jesus que é outro prédio marcante com mais de um altar. Depois disso, pudemos visitar a Igreja, Convento e Seminário de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, que estava fechado da última vez que visitamos Itu, que é de estilo barroco e colonial construído no século XVIII e também tem um belo teto de madeira pintada. After this, we seen our friend, which we hadn't seen in over a year, ate pizza and went back to his house to say hi to his three pugs. It was a nice day.
Depois disso, vimos nosso amigo, que não víamos há mais de um ano, comeu pizza e voltou para sua casa para cumprimentar seus três pugs. Foi um dia legal.
