The Reserve Bank of India on Friday released the first look of Rs 10 notes which will soon come into circulation. The Rs 10 denomination currency banknote is in chocolate brown colour, which will have India’s cultural heritage Konark Sun Temple as a motif on the reverse side. In the post-demonetisation period, people would be worried about its downfall. Notably, PM Modi had announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes would cease to be legal tender on November 9 last year. But this new currency that is coming should not worry the public as their old Rs 10 notes will still remain valid. No need to rush to banks in panic. “All the banknotes in the denomination of Rs 10 issued by the Reserve Bank in the earlier series will continue to be legal tender,” RBI said in its official statement. Significantly, RBI had rushed to fill the void caused by the ban on old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes by printing new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes.

The central bank will shortly issue Rs 10 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (new) series, bearing a signature of Urjit R Patel, Governor, RBI, it said in a release. The base colour of the note is chocolate brown, it said. “The new denomination has motif of Sun Temple, Konark on the reverse, depicting the country’s cultural heritage,” the central bank said in its statement.

Among the salient features of the banknotes, on the obverse (front) the note will bear a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the centre, the Ashoka Pillar emblem on the right, watermarks and number panel with numerals growing from small to big on the top left side and bottom right side.

On the reverse (back), it will carry the year of printing on the left, a Swachh Bharat logo with a slogan, language panel, motif of Sun Temple and denominational numeral 10 in Hindi script Devnagari. The dimension of the banknote will be 63 mm by 123 mm.

However, this is not the first time RBI has decided to bring into circulation new denominations. Earlier, in August 2017, RBI had announced the introduction of the new fluorescent blue Rs 50 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series, bearing Patel’s signature. A motif of Hampi with Chariot along with the Swachh Bharat logo and slogan replaces the image of Indian Parliament with a hoisted flag printed on the reverse side of the old Rs 50 note. Just a few days later it announced new Rs 200 notes as well.
