Making valentines - supplies2 crop February 2020.jpg

On Wednesday when I got back from the gym, the plumber came out and looked around and said he’d give us an estimate. After reminiscing about local people from way back (he grew up in town) he went off to work. I started to drag out all my materials for making valentines.

L –R: construction paper, many types of doilies, premade heart and other shapes, templates of hearts and animals, envelopes for mailing, markers sorted by color, glitter pens, colored pencils sorted by color, glue (2 types), tape, scissors

My intern was coming and she’s very good at drawing so I thought she might like doing this. I had 3 to make for my husband, my sister, and my mom.

When I was a kid we used to prepare and bring valentines like these for school. At some point my mom got materials and we started making some, probably for family.

My intern had only made valentines once before so this was an adventure for her. I think she was a tad overwhelmed by the choices.

I make valentines most years. It takes a long time to do. We started at 9:30 on Wednesday (after we looked at all the fittings for the addition that had come in) and did not finish by noon when she left.

My hands sometimes don’t cooperate but Wednesday was a good day for them. Some years I create them on the computer when I don’t have the time or energy or forgot to start them early enough ahead.

The top one was finished on that side but I had to put the message on it. The little sparkly hearts don’t stick well, so I was waiting for the glue to dry. I got the coloring done on the bottom one but it needs more decorating and a message.

I still have 1 more to do but those 2 have to be mailed out so I need to finish them sooner. I’ll probably work on them on Saturday and get them in the mail.

15 Haddock crop February 2020.jpg

The results of Tuesday’s fishing: 15 haddock, he limited out, as did the entire boat. They came in early because of that.

He cleaned them up while we made valentines and went around to the neighbors and gave away fish. I’d had him up very early to get me to the gym so we’d be back in time for the plumber. So he was pretty tired all day.

WHAT a fun project (making Valentine's cards)!
I haven't made any in decades! So glad you and your intern enjoyed the fun time together.

Oh how great that your husband gave away the haddock!

This will be my daughters first Valentine’s Day that she’ll be old enough to enjoy... I’m thinking that making some Valentine’s art with her will need to be done! Great IDEA!

Glad I inspired you! Have fun with her. :))

There is nothing better than something home made. We gave cards like the ones you pictured to school friends too but we never made any. Great fishing day and I am sure your neighbors were very happy. I love haddock and I make Poor Man's Lobster with them too.

I'd love to see the recipe for poor man's lobster....

Here it is and it is very simple. I grew up on a boat every summer and we fished a lot. Our freezer was always full of fish. So this is the recipe for frozen haddock fillets. Me, my family and friends say that it tastes better than lobster and of course, it is very tender. Hope you like it.

Boil 1-quart of water and add 1-cup of sugar.
Add frozen haddock fillets.
Boil for 10 minutes.
Make a broth with 1-cup of hot water and 2-chicken bouillon cubes.
Take fish out of water and pat dry.
Place in baking dish, pour broth over it.
Salt and pepper to taste.
Bake 340 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
Serve with melted butter.

That's an easy recipe! Thanks for sharing!

My pleasure. : )
