BMKG Warns of Impending Extreme Weather |
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Sultan Iskandar Muda (SIM) Class I Meteorology Station in Banda Aceh has issued an early warning regarding the potential for extreme weather that could hit several areas in Aceh from June 19 to 21, 2026.
Several regencies/cities are predicted to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, potentially accompanied by strong winds and potentially triggering hydrometeorological disasters.
Angga Dirta, Forecaster on Duty at BMKG SIM Banda Aceh, explained that these conditions are influenced by the activity of Equatorial Rossby Waves and Kelvin Waves in the Indian Ocean region west of Sumatra. Furthermore, the presence of wind gyres in Aceh contributes to the formation of rain clouds.
He explained that the relatively warm sea surface temperatures in the waters west and south of Sumatra also increase the evaporation process and the supply of water vapor to the atmosphere, contributing to the formation of convective clouds.
"This phenomenon has the potential to cause moderate to heavy rain that can occur suddenly, especially in the afternoon and evening," said Angga, Friday, June 19, 2026.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that heavy rain will occur in several areas on June 19, including Aceh Besar, Aceh Jaya, West Aceh, South Aceh, Aceh Singkil, Aceh Tamiang, East Aceh, North Aceh, Bireuen, Pidie, Pidie Jaya, Simeulue, Nagan Raya, Central Aceh, Southeast Aceh, Gayo Lues, Bener Meriah, Lhokseumawe, Southwest Aceh, and Subulussalam.
On June 20, the potential for extreme weather remains high in the coastal areas of western, central, and eastern Aceh. Meanwhile, on June 21, heavy rain is predicted to potentially hit Aceh Besar, Aceh Tamiang, Central Aceh, East Aceh, Bener Meriah, Bireuen, and Gayo Lues.
In addition to heavy rainfall, the BMKG also warns of the potential for strong winds. On June 19, these conditions are predicted to occur in Aceh Besar, West Aceh, South Aceh, and Sabang City. Meanwhile, on June 20, strong winds are still possible in Aceh Besar and South Aceh.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urges the public to increase their vigilance against possible flooding, landslides, fallen trees, and transportation disruptions due to extreme weather.
"The public is expected to remain vigilant when carrying out outdoor activities and always follow official weather information issued by the BMKG," said Angga.
In addition to monitoring weather conditions, the BMKG also detected three hotspots in Aceh based on satellite observations on June 18, 2026. These hotspots are located in Paya Bakong District, North Aceh Regency, and Penanggalan and Rundeng Districts in Subulussalam City with a moderate level of confidence.
In Lhokseumawe, the government is anticipating the arrival of the rainy season by normalizing drainage in several areas and optimizing the function of reservoirs. Heavy rains that hit Lhokseumawe on June 7th caused flooding on Jalan Perdagangan, Sukaramai, and several other roads. However, the water receded quickly, preventing flooding.[]
