The Title of Perkasa Alam for the Late Abu Razak

Banda Aceh – The Wali Nanggroe Aceh, His Excellency Tgk. Malik Mahmud Al Haythar, conferred the title of Mighty of the Realm on the late H. Kamaruddin Abu Bakar, also known as Abu Razak.

The Head of Cooperation and Public Relations for the Wali Nanggroe, Zulfikar Idris, stated that the title was conferred during the "Honorary Titles of the Wali Nanggroe" event last Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the Wali Nanggroe Hall, Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

The awarding of the title of Mighty of the Realm was marked by the pinning of a pin and a peusijuek (fresh flour) ceremony, which was received by the eldest son of the late Abu Razak, Muntazar.

The title of Mighty of the Realm is an honorary title bestowed by the Wali Nanggroe to prominent Acehnese fighters as a token of appreciation for their service and dedication to the Acehnese struggle.

As is known, Abu Razak died in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday, March 19, at approximately 6:00 a.m. Saudi Arabian time, while performing the Umrah pilgrimage.

Abu Razak was born in Kaye Jatoe, Pidie Regency, on May 1, 1967. He attended Teupin Raya Public Elementary School in Pidie from 1973 to 1980, then continued on to Teupin Raya Public Junior High School from 1980 to 1983. He then completed his high school education at Teupin Raya Public Senior High School in Pidie from 1983 to 1986.

After high school, he continued his studies at the Accounting Academy of Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh, although he was unable to complete his studies due to the turbulent dynamics in Aceh. In 1988–1989, he attended military training at Camp Tajura, Libya.

His organizational journey began in 1988, when he joined the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) forces. In 1989, he earned significant trust as part of Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi's Personal Guard Team.

He served as GAM's Pidie Regional Commander from 1998–2000, then rose to become GAM's Operations Commander from 2000–2002. His leadership continued as GAM's Deputy Commander from 2002 to 2005, a crucial phase leading up to the peace negotiations and the signing of the Helsinki MoU.

After the peace, his role continued. Since 2005, he has served as Deputy Chair of the Aceh Transition Committee (KPA), the institution that oversees the transition of former combatants. His role in Acehnese politics has also been prominent. He served as Deputy Chair of the Aceh Party from 2007 to 2018, then served as Secretary General of the Aceh Party from 2018 until his death.

Outside the political and social sphere, Abu Razak also served as the Daily Chair of KONI Aceh for two terms, from 2014 to 2022. After that, he was entrusted as the General Chair of KONI Aceh from 2022 until his death in 2025.[]
