The Diary Game: Celebrating A Life Well Lived (21/2/2026)
Happy weekend dear Steemians!!! ✨
How is your weekend going? Mine went well, though I must confess… it was a little tiring but beautifully meaningful.
Today, I attended the celebration of life (burial ceremony) of Late Mrs. Patricia Leo Okure, the beloved grandmother of my coursemate. The event took place in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. As coursemates, we had planned ahead to attendour own little way of showing love, solidarity, and support during such an important family moment.
I woke up early this morning, tidied up a few things at home, freshened up, and got ready to leave. We agreed to meet by 9am… and as the punctual person that I am, I arrived before 9. Guess what? Some people were nowhere to be found. 😅
We waited… and waited… and waited some more. What was supposed to be 9am slowly stretched into hours. I even got annoyed at myself for not eating a proper breakfast before leaving the house. I truly believed 9am meant 9am! The bus eventually moved by 11am after what felt like forever. Thankfully, I came prepared with some snacks and water, which saved me from total hunger drama. I even shared with my friends.

The journey itself was smooth and pleasant. One thing I truly love about Akwa Ibom State is the good roads no stressful potholes or bumpy rides. I sat by the window and enjoyed the cool breeze, the greenery, and the beautiful scenery along the way. Sometimes, it’s the little moments like watching nature roll by that make long trips worthwhile.

We arrived at the church a little past 12 noon. I honestly thought we would meet the service almost over, but to my surprise, the mass was still ongoing. After the prayers and final rites, the priest prayed over the body, and she was laid to rest.

What stood out to me was that this burial was not soaked in deep sorrowit was truly a celebration of a life well lived. Mama lived long and was blessed with many children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. The atmosphere shifted from solemn to joyful as different groups came forward to share beautiful memories and testimonies about her. It warmed my heart hearing how each child and grandchild had a special pet name she gave them. That alone spoke volumes about the love she shared.

Then came the dancing and merriment! 💃🏽 The compound was filled with music, laughter, and vibrant displays from various groups. It was refreshing to see people celebrating legacy instead of just mourning loss.

And of course… food! After the long wait in the morning and the journey, we were seriously hungry. When the food arrived, we didn’t waste time at all. We ate to our satisfaction and felt human again.
We took pictures with the family, danced a little more, exchanged warm smiles and hugs, and before we knew it, it was time to head back. The journey home was calm and peaceful. We wanted to arrive before dark, and thankfully we did.

I got back to Uyo safely, freshened up, and finally laid on my bed. At that moment, I felt the weight of the day but also deep gratitude. It had been long, slightly stressful at the beginning, but overall fulfilling. The weather was good, the trip was successful, and we returned safely.
Indeed, God is good. 🙏
Weekends like this remind me that life is precious, time is short, and showing up for people truly matters. 💛
