The Diary Game: (18/08/2026) From Fajr to a Charcoal Stove: An Unexpected Chore

Today turned out to be another interesting day. It started quietly, just the way I like some mornings. After performing my Fajr prayer, I picked up my Qur’an and spent some time reciting. The house was still calm, and there was something peaceful about sitting with the Qur’an before the activities of the day began.

After that, my day was going normally until my mum called me and asked me to do something I wasn't particularly excited about, wash my younger brother's dirty plates.
Honestly, I hesitated for a moment.
Washing plates isn't exactly my favourite house chore, and to make matters worse, these weren't even the dishes I was responsible for. My first thought was basically, “Why me?” But it was my mum who asked, so I knew there wasn't much room for negotiation.
I got up and started preparing everything. I mixed some soap with water and began sorting the dishes. I separated the cups, plates, spoons, and pots because my mum has her own particular method of washing dishes.
She always advises us to wash the cups first, especially because they can easily pick up oil or dirt from the other dishes. So I followed her method.
First came the cups.
Then I moved on to the plates, followed by the spoons. Finally, I tackled the pots, which, as usual, seemed to require a little more effort than everything else.

By the time I finished, the dishes looked completely different. The plates were clean, the cups were shining, and everything was arranged neatly. Looking at the finished work actually gave me a small sense of satisfaction.
Then something interesting happened.
My mum picked up one of the pots I had just washed and used it to prepare our dinner. Since there was no electricity, she placed the pot on our charcoal stove and started cooking.
Watching the cooking process reminded me of how ordinary household activities can sometimes become memorable moments. There was no special event happening, no big plans, just prayer, Qur’an recitation, washing dishes, and my mum preparing dinner over charcoal.
At the beginning of the day, I wasn't happy about being asked to wash those dishes. But by the end, I realized that sometimes we don't need to enjoy a task before doing it. Some responsibilities simply need to be handled, especially when they help the people around us.
Today reminded me that obedience, helping at home, and doing small things properly are also valuable parts of daily life. What looked like an annoying chore in the morning ended up becoming one of the little stories that made my day.
