The past two weeks was full of drama in the heart of Uyo, Nigeria, a commotion erupted as the Ekpo masquerade, a revered cultural symbol in Akwa Ibom State, was arrested. The Ekpo masquerade, a traditional belief and cultural play, had been an integral part of the state's heritage, often displayed during festival seasons, traditional marriages, and cultural days.

However, in recent times, concerns had been raised across radio stations, news outlets, and social media platforms about unscrupulous elements hiding behind the masquerade mask to extort, rob, and commit heinous crimes, including rape.

In response to these grievances, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, announced a ban on the Ekpo masquerade, ordering the police to arrest anyone seen wearing the mask. This directive led to the arrest and detention of Mr. David Effiong, who was caught wearing the Ekpo masquerade, at the state police headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia.

As the case unfolded, Mr. Effiong was charged to court, but in a surprising turn of events, the presiding Judge declared his freedom. The Judge's ruling was based on the grounds that Ekpo is a traditional religion and cultural practice in Akwa Ibom State, which is protected by the Nigerian constitution's provision for freedom of worship.

The Judge's verdict prompted the Governor to revoke the ban on the Ekpo masquerade. Instead, the Governor ordered the police to focus on arresting and prosecuting individuals who exploit the Ekpo culture for criminal activities. This decision marked a significant shift in the approach to addressing the issue, acknowledging the importance of preserving cultural heritage while also ensuring public safety.
