🍌 How to tell the difference between a banana and a slug 🍌steemCreated with Sketch.

Sir Geoffrey Bananington is the Professor of Comparative Fruit, Literature and Interspecies Negotiation at Bruisington University (and never lets any of us forget it). Right now he's on a mission to right the injustices done to bananas. Professor B tends to rant a bit, but he's part of the Banana Collective, and we kinda like the guy.

What is it with humans and their misguided propensity to equate anything remotely yellow or curvy with that supreme-est of fruits, The Banana?

Case in point, the ariolimax californicus, more commonly referred to as the California Banana Slug.

C'mon, people! In what version of reality does this forest bottom-dweller even remotely resemble the high-hanging, palm-tree-swinging, King of Fruits, The Banana?

I wish I could say it's an understandable mistake... but I really can't.

Just to help you out the next time you see something slimy creeping along the dirt in your pathway...

Scientist studying banana slug in its natural environment

...I have created a chart to which you can refer to help you in classification of said specimen.

There. That should clear up any further confusion in the matter.

The rants of Professor Bananington:

Sort:

I've seen a banana slug, in the wild and up close and personal. It in no way resembled a tasty fruit.

As a gardener I don't like slugs and snails anyway, they do a lot of damage to my tender plants. This giant slug was a thing of nightmares!

Exactly what I was referring to! The nightmarish slug should in no way be compared to the King of Fruits!

You, my dear, are awarded Honorary Banana status for the day.

Thank you, I will treasure it!

Thanks for clearing that up, Prof. 🍌 😃 🙃

You're welcome, Ms. @redheadpei.

As an esteemed professor at Bruisington University, it is my daily task to illuminate and elucidate; it just comes naturally to me.

Hey, and thanks for, like, re-steeming our post, @redheadpei!

I saw this and thought of you! Sorry for crashing your post.

hahaha, we love when readers drop factoids and funny things about bananas for us. We even occasionally do posts about that sort of thing. So thanks!

Dear Professor Bananington,

Thank you for the detailed contrast of the bananas and those yellow slugs. The chart made it even easier for all of us to know the difference between the two. And for that, we should not even be comparing them at all. That scientist that was "studying the banana slug in its natural environment" should have known better.

Once again, thank you for always clarifying the issues. You nailed it again, dear Professor!

Sincerely,
@evlachsblog

P.S. Is this thing (picture below) fruit or vegetable?

If this is a fruit, it is another fruit that is yellow and "sometimes" curvy and has seeds in it. It's also hot!!! Please forgive my lack of knowledge and my ignorance. I hope you can also clear up any confusion regarding this matter. But whatever it is, The Banana is still the KING OF ALL FRUITS!!!

You are welcome, @evlachsblog... You are obviously a person who appreciates bananas, and for that, I appreciate you.

The picture you provided looks like another of these banana wannabes, the Banana Pepper. I did a post a while back...

Oh yes, you did too, Professor Bananington. How could I forget? I even commented on your post. Again, please forgive my ignorance.

Everyone has a lot going on in their lives these days, no apologies needed.
You gave me the opportunity to link to my post again. :-)

I played with banana slugs when I was a kid! They are gross and interesting, but in no way to be confused with bananas!
Thanks for clearing this up for those who have never had the experience of a slimy slug crawling over their hands. ;)
