Incredible India Monthly Contest of January #2: Protective vs. Possessive!
Protective and possessive are similar, different in meaning because both are linked to care and attachment. Both words are often confused because of how they are used or expressed.
Question 1: How do you glance towards the two "P's"? Describe!
Both words are of different meaning which has to do with action and expression; protective is as a result of care, love and responsibility. This can come from parents, loved ones, friends or partner. This act shows that the person value your well-being and safety.
Possessiveness at the other hand is a bit deep and it is a display of insecurities, control and fear of the unknown. This action shows that the person just want to dominate and be oppressive.
Protective and possessive are easier identify or spot from the person's action or intention.
Question 2: Share some reasons behind the possessiveness in any relationships!
There are many factors that triggers possessiveness in relationships and they include;
- Insecurities
- Trust issues
- Past trauma
- Low self-esteem
- Age
- Entitlement
- Fear of loss and giving out what you are not ready to lose.
All these are the reasons why many people turned out being possessive and these factors comes out when the person is overwhelmed with emotions, be an entitle individual and also have this deep desire to control.
Question 3: Do you believe both "P's" exist in each relation we are close to? Share some pros and cons behind both "P's"!
Yes, I believe. Both Ps are actions and many display this attributes but the intentions behind it makes it easy to differentiate. It is the expression that will determine the one that is healthy for a relationship.
Protective
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| It shows how supportive, caring and loving a person is | Lead to independency when it becomes excessive |
| It provides safety to loved ones which strengthen bonds and build trust | It can slow growth when there's no boundaries |
Possessive
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A display of fear | leads to restrictions |
| The first impression is usually nice; you will feel valued | It slowly turn into manipulation and control |
| It comes from strong emotional attachment | It brings insecurities, hinders freedom and weaken a person's identity. |
Protectiveness and possessiveness are usually displayed around us and even in the smallest relationship close by but both only work when it is balanced with pure love and trust in order to avoid damage within.
