What is the definition of security according to your perspective?

Security is the condition of being protected, secure and free from danger or anything that negatively affects peace which is obtainable through protective measures. It is also a protective shield given to an individual, a community, a nation, properties and data against threats or danger.

The security of human beings covers various domains of life among which are:

  • Physical security: This is an aspect of security which covers lives and property. This could be individual or national security as the case may be. Some of the measures taken here include the installation of CCTV cameras and the deployment of security guards across communities, government establishments, national borders etc.
  • Information/Cyber security: This is an aspect of security where data in all forms is protected to ensure confidentiality and retrieval when needed.
  • Social/human security: This aspect of security dwells on the protection of individuals and families against various financial risks, health, economic, and food security.

These are a few aspects or forms of security among others

In addition to prioritising technical security measures, it is essential for us to also address the aspect of social security. I welcome your insights on this matter.

Social security as mentioned earlier is a form of security whose primary aim is to protect individual life ensuring the availability of food, good health, good economy and freedom from financial risk. No matter how tight the security of a nation is in all aspects, if the issue of social security ( which has to do with food, health, and the economy) is not properly taken care of, it is a clear indication that such a nation is inviting the spread of poverty, sickness, unemployment and a high rate of vulnerable citizens or population which will in turn affects the nation in its generality.
Social security is a critical issue and a fundamental element for economic stability, Poverty Reduction, Increased Productivity and human capital development. Therefore, it must not be neglected no matter what.

To establish a civilised society, what are the key principles that should be implemented?

Civilised society is a complex developmental stage of social organisation that has to do with a system of government, culture, settlements, legal system and intellectual growth. Therefore, the key principles from these definitions are:

  • Settlement: A civilised society is characterised by a densely populated settlement rather than a sparse or nomadic settlement.
  • Culture: Culture establishes shared norms, values, ethical behaviour, morality, harmony and respect that bring about peaceful coexistence.
  • System of government: For a civilised society a system of government must demonstrate accountability, justice and fairness, orderliness etc.
  • Legal system: This facilitates peace by interpreting the laws of the land, enforcing law and order, safeguarding the rights of citizens, and resolving disputes.
